CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team was in action today as they played host to the University of Valley Forge. The Phoenix (9-1, 1-1 CSAC) defeated the Patriots (1-4, 0-0 CSAC), in both games of the doubleheader, by scores of 11-5 and 13-1.
Game One: Junior
Dereck Ivey (Fairfield, PA., Fairfield) took to the mound in game one, as the Blue and White got out to an early start. After retiring the top of the first in order, the Wilson offense got the runs flowing. Freshman
Peyton Mason (Knoxville, MD, Boonsboro HS) drove in two runs on a double to left-center field. The next batter, junior
Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, Montgomery CC (MD)), added two more runs with a base knock to right field. Later on in the inning, senior
James Husar (Oxford, CT., CCBC Essex (Md.)) added one more run with a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 5-0 after the first inning.
In the top of the second,
Ivey continued to deal as he struck out three batters. In the bottom half of the inning, the offense kept producing. Junior
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) got things started with a triple that drove in a run. Later on,
Mason added another run off an RBI triple, followed by
Buchanan who added an RBI single, extending the Phoenix lead to 8-0.
Moving ahead to the bottom of the fourth inning, Wilson added three more runs.
Mason drove in one run off a single to left, followed by
Buchanan who added two runs off a homer to deep left field. Wilson would go on to take game one by a final score of 11-5.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix scored 11 runs off 12 hits against zero errors while their opponents scored five runs on six hits against three errors.
Ivey collected his first win of the season, striking out eight batters and only letting up two hits.
Mason finished game one hitting a perfect 3-3 with three runs, four RBIs, one double, and one triple.
Buchanan also finished the game batting 1.000, going 3-3 with three runs, four RBIs, a stolen base, and a homer.
Game Two: After two scoreless innings, Wilson struck first in the bottom of the third. Senior
KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) drove in a run off an RBI sacrifice fly to right-field. The offense continued to produce as the Phoenix added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior
Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) got the scoring started by stealing home. Shortly after, junior
Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill) knocked in two more on an RBI single to left.
Skipping ahead to the bottom of the sixth, Wilson looked to add more insurance runs with the score at 7-1.
Buchanan drove in the first by drawing a walk with the bases loaded and
Rosario added the second on a fielder's choice.
Finn knocked in three off an RBI double down the left-field line and
Curry added the last run with a double, extending the lead 13-1 after six innings of play. After a harmless top of the seventh, the Phoenix took game two by a final score of 13-1.
Inside the Box Score: The Blue and White scored 13 runs off 11 hits against zero errors while their opponents finished with one run on five hits against one error. Freshman
Hunter Griebel (Stevensville, MD, Kent Island HS) tallied his second win of the season while striking out three and only giving up two hits. All together the Wilson bullpen added 12 strikeouts in game two.
Finn finished with three hits and six RBIs in this game including a double.
Buchanan added two hits, an RBI, and a walk while
Rosario went 2-4 with three runs and one RBI.
Up Next: The Phoenix will hit the road as they get set to face the Mounties of Mount Aloysius College (4-4) on Tuesday, March 30, at 1:00 pm.
