Baseball Splits Doubleheader to Open Conference Play

LA, PLUME, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team traveled to take on the Giants of Keystone College, as they opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play, earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (7-1, 1-1 CSAC) split their doubleheader with the Giants (1-1, 1-1 CSAC), dropping the first game, 3-9, but winning the second, 7-6.

Game One: After Wilson was retired in order, in the top of the first inning, Keystone jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. The Phoenix recovered quickly in the top of the second, as senior Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., Westmoreland Community College) drove in freshman Peyton Mason (Knoxville, MD, Boonsboro HS), making it 3-1. The pitching was a big factor in this game as neither team could get much offense going after the flurry of runs early.

Picking up in the top of the sixth inning, Wilson cut their deficit to just one run after Mason ripped a triple to left-center field and then was able to score off a throwing error, bringing the score to 3-2. The Phoenix continued to battle but could not overcome, as the Giants drove in four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Keystone closed out game one with a final score of 9-3.

Inside the Box Score: The Blue and White scored three runs on ten hits and two errors while their opponents finished with nine runs on four hits and one error. Mason finished game one hitting a perfect 3-3 with three runs and two walks, junior Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) went 2-3 with a walk, and junior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, Montgomery CC (MD)) hit 3-5. Junior Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) continued to deal early on, striking out ten batters and only giving up one hit, despite taking his first loss this season.

Game Two: In the top of the first, the Phoenix struck first as junior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) scored on a wild pitch, giving Wilson an early 1-0 lead. Junior Kevin Ehrman (York, PA., Central York) started on the hill for the Phoenix and had a no-hitter going through the first three innings.

In the second, Buchanan added a run, scoring off a wild pitch that brought the score to 2-0. Later on, in the top of the fourth, Buchanan scored another run off an RBI from senior James Husar (Oxford, CT., CCBC Essex (Md.)), extending the Wilson lead to 3-0.  In the fifth, sophomore Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, Old Dominion Univ.) launched a homer to left field that drove in two more runs. The Phoenix held off a late rally from the Giants as they took game two by a final score of 7-6.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson scored seven runs off 13 hits and two errors while their opponents score six runs on 11 hits and one error. Ehrman stuck out eight batters on his way to his second win of the season. Marrale finished the game going 2-4 with two RBIs, one home run, and a double, Husar hit 2-4 with two RBIs, Buchanan went 2-3 with one walk and junior Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill) went 3-4.

Up Next: The Phoenix will have a week off before facing the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University (0-2, 0-2 CSAC) on Sunday, March 28, in a doubleheader starting at noon.
