Phoenix Cruise Past Defenders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - The Wilson College baseball team hosted Clarks Summit University this afternoon in their home opener at Henninger Field. The Phoenix (6-0) stayed perfect on the season with a 14-1 and 13-1 double-header sweep of the Defenders (2-5). 

Game One: The Phoenix jumped on top early in the bottom of the first inning as junior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) stroked a triple to right field. Sophomore Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD) followed with an RBI double to right center to push across the first run of the game. A single by freshman Peyton Mason (Knoxville, MD, Boonsboro HS) put runners on the corners and junior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD ) singled to left to make the score 2-0. In the bottom of the second, the Phoenix added two more runs. Senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ) got things going with a walk and then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A walk by Cook put runners on the corners again. A well executed double steal put Cook on second as Curry swiped home. Marrale followed with and RBI single to score Cook to give the hosts a 4-0 lead. The Defenders got on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI ground out to pull within three runs. In the fifth inning, the Phoenix erupted for nine runs to break the game open. Marrale led of with his third hit of the game and came around to score on a double off the bat of Buchanan. Junior Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) followed with an RBI single to make it 6-1. Senior Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., ) cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field to push the score to 8-1. Next, senior James Husar (Oxford, CT., ) blasted a solo shot to left field for the 9-1 advantage. Later in the inning, Marrale singled again to drive in junior Joseph Cofer (Dumfries, VA., Forest Park). Buchanan rounded out the scoring in the fifth with a 2-RBI double to right center. The Phoenix added one more run in the bottom of the sixth as back-to-back doubles by junior Connor Martin (Warner Robins, GA., Houston County) and Curry tallied the final run for the team in the 14-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Marrale led the Phoenix at the plate going 4-for-4 with with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Buchanan went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and a pair of doubles. Procopio's home run was his team leading third of the season. Junior Colby Maun (Fort Loudon, PA., ) grabbed the win on the mound after throwing four innings and allowing just 1 run while striking out 5 batters and walking none. 

Game Two: The nightcap for the Phoenix looked similar to game one. In the second inning, Husar drove in the games first run with a sacrifice fly that scored Buchanan. Junior Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill) followed with an RBI single to put the Phoenix ahead 2-0. The Defenders threatened in the top of the third as they had runners on second and third with two outs, but freshman hurler Hunter Griebel (Stevensville, MD , Kent Island HS) slammed the door with a huge strikeout to get out of the jam. In the fourth inning, the Phoenix tacked on four more runs. Curry again got things going with a single and stolen base. Procopio followed with an RBI triple to right center. Later in the inning, Buchanan blasted a 2-run homerun to push the Phoenix lead to 6-0. In the fifth, a 2-RBI single by freshman Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD , Sherwood HS) scored Mason and Marrale to make the score 8-0. The Phoenix tallied four more runs in the sixth as junior Eli Klopp (College Park, MD., DeMatha Catholic) started things off with a triple to left center. Freshman Jacob Pryor (Myersville, MD, Middletown HS) would follow with an RBI double. Later in the inning, the Phoenix would get RBI singles from junior Eric Holz (Williamsport, PA., Loyalsock Township) and Cofer as the hosts would close out the game with the 13-1 win.

Inside the Box Score: 13 different Phoenix would record a hit in the game led by Buchanan with 2. Griebel got the win after allowing just 1 run in four innings of work while striking out 5 and walking 2.
