Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Phoenix Fall to Vixens in Opener

Shippensburg, PA. - For the first time since 2014, Wilson College competed in women's lacrosse this evening as the Phoenix (0-1) fell to visiting Sweet Briar College by a final score of 8-4. The game was played under the lights at Shippensburg University's Robb Sports Complex.

How It Happened: The Phoenix jumped on top early as senior Danielle Stafford (Jessup, MD., Glen Burnie) picked up a ground ball and found the back of the goal for the 1-0 lead just 30 seconds into the action. After a pair of wide shots by the Vixens (1-5), freshman Megan Simms (Frederick, MD, Governor Thomas Johnson HS) and sophomore Paige Reynolds (Keedysville, MD, Boonsboro High School) each put shots on goal, however the Vixens goalkeeper denied both attempts. The Vixens got on the board at 22:58 mark on a Kaylah Bailey goal, her first of 5 on the night. Three minutes later the visitors grabbed a 2-1 lead on a Sarah Schindler goal. The Phoenix tried to even the score midway through the opening half as junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) and freshman Anna Gibson (Cecil County, MD, Perryville HS) took aim on goal, but both shots were saved by the Vixens keeper. With five minutes remaining in the half, the Vixens extended their lead on a free position goal by Jess Roberts. Two and a half minutes later, the Phoenix would respond as Gibson connected on her first of three goals in the contest to cut the deficit to 3-2. A goal late in the half by the Vixens pushed the visitors lead to 4-2 heading into the half.

The second half started with the Phoenix trying to convert on a pair of free position attempts but both shots sailed wide. However, Gibson would pick up a ground ball and connect on her second goal of the night less than four minutes into the half to pull the Phoenix within one point at 4-3. The Vixens again responded as Bailey scored a pair of goals in less than a minute to extend the lead to 6-3. Later in the half, the Vixens would again score back-to-back goals in less than a minute to put the game out of reach at 8-3. Gibson would tack on her third goal of the game to make the final score 8-4. The Phoenix defense played solid over the final thirteen minutes of the contest limiting the Vixens to just 3 shot attempts.

Inside the Box Score: Gibson tallied a hat-trick in her first collegiate game. Singer led the Phoenix with 8 shot attempts and 5 ground balls. Overall, the Phoenix held a 24-23 advantage in shots while the Vixens held a 7-6 edge in free position shots.

Up Next: Wilson will be back in action on Wednesday, March 24 as they host Mount Aloysius College.
