Phoenix Win Overtime Thriller

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team continued to stay hot this afternoon with a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) victory at Bryn Athyn College. The Phoenix (4-4, 3-0 CSAC) have won four of their last five games and remain unbeaten in conference play after the 61-56 overtime victory over the Lions (2-2, 1-2 CSAC).

How It Happened: The Phoenix doubled up the Lions midway through the first quarter as junior Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian) connected on a three-pointer to make the score 10-5. To close the quarter, the Lions scored the final three points to pull within two points at 10-8. In the second quarter, the Lions opened up with an 8-2 run to take an 18-12 lead. In the final seconds of the half, junior Amanda Smida (Landenberg, Pa., ) drained a three-pointer to pull the Phoenix within 20-16 at the intermission. The Phoenix grabbed the lead a few minutes into the third quarter when junior Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., ) hit a jumper to make the score 23-22. After a Lions layup put the hosts back in front, senior Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) hit a layup of her own to put the Phoenix back on top 25-24. Trailing 34-31 late in the quarter, Cannon got a steal and made a layup as time expired to make the score 34-33 in favor of the Lions heading to the fourth quarter. The two teams traded baskets for most of the early part of the fourth quarter and eventually the Lions grew their lead to 46-41 with under five minutes remaining. A 7-0 run by the Phoenix that featured buckets by Murphy, Cannon, and junior Naomi Hanton (Bristow, Va., ) gave the Phoenix their first lead since midway through the third quarter at 48-46. Back-to-back jumpers by the Lions gave the hosts a 50-48 lead with 8 seconds to play in regulation. Murphy drew a foul with 3 seconds to play and stepped to the charity stripe and calmly made both clutch free throws to send the game to overtime tied at 50-50. The Lions struck first in the extra session with a layup, but fifth year senior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) nailed a jumper to tie the game at 52-52. A pair of free throws by junior Madison Ross (New Oxford, PA., New Oxford) gave the Phoenix a 54-52 edge. Hanton stepped to the line with 90 seconds left and knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 56-52. After a jumper by the Lions pulled them within two, Singer knocked down a three-pointer with under a minute to go to make it 59-54. Again, the Lions answered to pull within 3, but with the clock winding down, Cannon put the game on ice with a layup to preserve the Phoenix victory at 61-56.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix shot 14 of 19 from the free throw line for 73.7% which was the difference in the game as the Lions only tallied 8 of 18 attempts for 44.4%. Hanton recorded an 11 point and 11 rebound double-double, while Canon and Murphy led the team in scoring with 12 points each. The Phoenix defense forced 26 turnovers.
