Phoenix Torch Falcons

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team squared off against the Falcons of Cedar Crest College earlier this evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match-up. The Phoenix (5-4, 4-0 CSAC) frustrated the Falcons (1-7, 0-5 CSAC), defeating them by a final score of 77-66. 

How It Happened: Cedar Crest opened the game up with a deep three, but junior Amanda Smida (Landenberg, Pa., Penn State Harrisburg) answered right back with a three of her own. About midway through the first quarter, Wilson expanded their lead to eight points off a layup from junior Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian). The Falcons then cut the lead to just four points as both teams entered the second quarter with the score at 19-15. In the second quarter, the Phoenix continued to pile it on, ballooning their lead to nine points with just over three minutes left in the half. Wilson took a six-point lead going into halftime, 36-30. 

In the third, Cedar Crest came out and drained three shots from deep, cutting their deficit to just two points with just under seven minutes left in the quarter. The Phoenix kept their composure and continued to distribute the ball, eventually expanding their lead to 56-48 going into the final quarter. In the fourth, Wilson started a 10-2 run that pushed their lead to 14 points midway through the quarter. The Phoenix would go on to take this one by a final score of 77-66. 

Inside the Box Score: Junior Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College) paced the offense with 24 points. Murphy tallied 17 points and nine rebounds while junior Naomi Hanton (Bristow, Va., Keystone College) registered her second straight double-double, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Five others finished in the scoring column for Wilson while they finished with 34 points in the paint. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will face the Defenders of Clarks Summit (7-1, 4-0 CSAC) on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, on the road at 7:00 p.m.
