WASHINGTON, D.C.- Wilson College men's basketball faced off against Gallaudet University earlier today in a non-conference battle. The Phoenix (5-4, 2-0 CSAC) bested the Bison (1-8, 1-1 United East) with a late-game push to secure the win with a final score of 63-59.
How It Happened: Junior
Warrick Godwin Jr. (Largo, MD, College of So. MD) opened the game earning the first nine points for the Phoenix off three consecutive three-pointers. Wilson was able to keep the lead until the Bison started building a lead the Phoenix couldn't catch going into the half with a score of 33-29. In the second half, the Phoenix continued to chip away at the Bison's lead and managed to gain the lead six minutes into the second half with a score of 40-39 off a layup from freshman
Darren Green (Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook HS). From this layup on the Phoenix would hold the lead until there were nine minutes of play remaining until the Bison were able to start to build their lead. With two minutes remaining in the game, the Phoenix trailed 59-57 and a three-pointer from
Godwin Jr. gave the Phoenix the lead 60-59. The Phoenix would have another quick layup and a final free throw to bring the game to its final score of 63-59.
Inside the Box Score: Rebounding was a huge part of Wilson's success as they outrebounded the Bison 50-37. This allowed for the Phoenix to capitalize on second-chance points where they outscored the Bison 28-10.
Godwin Jr. and senior
Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD., Northwest HS) led the Phoenix offense with 23 and 16 points.
Thomas also totaled 11 boards to earn himself a double-double in the match.
Up Next: The next game for the Phoenix is home against non-conference opponent Immaculata University (3-5, 0-0 Athletic East) Saturday, December 18 at 1:00 p.m.
