MONT ALTO, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team faced off against the Nittany Lions of Penn State Mont Alto earlier this evening in a non-conference bout. The Phoenix (0-2, 0-0 CSAC) were defeated by the Nittany Lions (2-1, 0-0 PSUAC) by a final score of 74-39.
How It Happened: Mont Alto started the first quarter on a 12-3 before Wilson started to chip away, eventually pulling within four points by the end of the quarter, 18-14. Juniors
Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College) and
Naomi Hanton (Bristow, Va., Keystone College) led the scoring the first with five points apiece. The Nittany Lions extended their lead to 39-18 by the end of the second half. Mont Alto jumped on an early run to open up the third quarter, pushing their lead to 56-22 when the quarter was over. The Phoenix started to string together some offensive spurts in the final quarter. Despite the effort, Wilson dropped this one by a final score of 74-39.
Inside the Box Score: Cannon and
Hanton led the scoring, both finishing with 13 points. Junior
Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA., Great Bridge Christian) added eight buckets while senior
Baylen Snyder (Dover, PA, Dover Area) chipped in three.
Murphy also tallied four steals while
Hanton recorded four blocks in the contest. The Phoenix finished shooting 65% from the floor while adding 18 points from the paint and 11 points off turnovers.
