Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Gators Gash Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team took on the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action, earlier this evening. The Phoenix (1-9, 1-2 CSAC) hung tough but were defeated by the Gators (7-9, 3-0 CSAC) by a final score of 3-0, with set scores of 25-20, 25-17, and 25-13. 

How It Happened: Wilson took the first two points in the first set, but Notre Dame followed that up with a 10-1 run that put them in front, 10-3. The Phoenix bore down and rattled off an 11-4 run that tied the match up at 14 apiece. During the run, junior Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) tallied two aces while senior Tia Jones (Springfield, VA., Lake Braddock) recorded three kills.  Wilson continued to fight, but the Gators would take the first set by a score of 25-20. In the second set, both teams continued to battle. Notre Dame took the lead first, but Wilson rallied back and evened things up at 6. Later in the set, with things tied at 11, the Phoenix started a run that extended their lead to 16-13. The Gators then started a run of their own that flipped the score and put them back on top, 22-16, as they would take the second set by a score of 25-17. In the final set, Notre Dame took an early 7-1 lead before Wilson started to get things rolling. Freshman Deah Menedis (Reisterstown, MD, Franklin High) added on kill, set up by junior Elizabeth Vuxta (Elizabethtown, PA., Elizabethtown), followed by another kill from Eigen-Zucchi. Later in the set, after a 7-0 run from the Gators, Menedis broke up the run with a kill, followed by an ace from senior Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School), and a kill from Eigen-Zucchi that added three more points. The Phoenix fought valiantly but Notre Dame would go on to take the final, 25-13. 

Inside the Box Score: Jones paced the offense with 11 kills, two aces, and one assist. Eigen-Zucchi added eight kills, two aces, four blocks, and 10 digs while Menedis added three kills and one block. Vuxta taliied19 assists and nine digs. Altogether, Wilson had 25 kills on 84 attempts against 20 errors while their opponent finished with 33 kills on 95 attempts against 16 errors. 

Up Next: The women's volleyball team will be back in action on Friday, October 8, where they will take on Kings College (13-2, 2-2 MAC) at 5:00 p.m.
