Baseball Delivers Against Dean

EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Wilson College baseball team took on the Bulldogs of Dean College in a nonconference doubleheader, earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (6-2, 0-0 CSAC) defeated the Bulldogs (1-4, 0-1 NECC) in both games by a score of 8-1, in the first game, and 7-6 in an exciting, come from behind, victory.

Game One: Sophomore Dereck Ivey (Fairfield, PA., Fairfield) took the mound for Wilson in game one as he kept the Dean offense at bay throughout the game. Picking up in the bottom of the second inning, the Phoenix started to get the offense going as junior Jacob Whittington (Salisbury, MD., Univ. of the Sciences) started the inning out with a single to center field. Shortly after, junior Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., Westmoreland Community College) reached base off a wild throw that allowed Whittington to score; pushing Wilson in front, 1-0. The next batter, sophomore Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills), drove in Procopio on an RBI double to left-center field, bringing the score to 2-0.

In the bottom of the third, junior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) drove in two more runs on an RBI single that extended the Phoenix lead to 4-0. Later on, in the top of the fifth, Ivey continued to deal as he struck out two more batters and forced another to fly out to left. In the bottom half of the inning, Wilson added some insurance runs, as they were able to push the score to 7-1. Freshman Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) started the scoring by reaching base on an error that drove in one run while, later on in the inning, Whittington knocked in two more on an RBI single to center, bringing the score to 7-1 after five innings. Sophomore Nick Quinn (Odenton, MD., St. Mary's) added one more run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth as the Phoenix would take game one by a final score of 8-1.

Inside the Box Score Game One: Wilson scored eight runs on eight hits and no errors while the Bulldogs scored one run on six hits with three errors. Ivey threw for six innings as he moves to 1-0 on the season; totaling seven strikeouts while only giving up one run in the game. Rosario led the charge going 2-4 with a double while Mercer also finished going 2-4. Whittington finished the game going 2-3 with two RBI's and a stolen base while Curry finished going 1-3 with two RBI's and a stolen base.

Game Two: Dean wasted no time in the game as they were able to score one run in the top of the first off of an error. Moving ahead to the top of the second, the Bulldogs tacked on one more off an RBI single to center field, bringing the score to 2-0. Dean continued to score, adding three more runs in the top of the third as they extended their lead to 5-0. The Phoenix would not be denied as Rosario reached base on a throwing error that let Curry score, pushing the score to 5-1.

After the Bulldogs added one more in the top of the sixth, the Wilson offense came alive. Freshman Drew Farrell (Mechanicsville, MD., St. Mary's Ryken) came in to pinch-hit for the Phoenix and came up in a big way as he doubled to left-center field and drove in two runs; cutting the lead to just 6-3. Later on in the inning, sophomore Eric Holz (Williamsport, PA., Loyalsock Township) knocked in two more on an RBI single to left, putting Wilson just one run behind, 6-5.

After a quiet top of the seventh, the Phoenix knew they had to get something started. Rosario started the inning off with a walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position from sophomore Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University). Shortly after, Mercer drove in the tying run off an RBI single to right. After Farrell drew a walk, senior James Husar (Oxford, CT., CCBC Essex (Md.)) drove in the winning run off a walk-off, RBI single to right. Giving Wilson a thrilling 7-6 victory in the second game.

Inside the Box Score Game Two: The Phoenix knocked in seven runs on seven hits with two errors in this one while their opponent added six runs on 10 hits with two errors. Sophomore Trystan Housman (Harrisburg, PA., Bishop McDevitt) picked up the win in this one as he threw for two innings while earning four strikeouts. Mercer finished going 2-2 with one RBI while Farrell finished going 1-1 with a double, two RBI's, and a walk. Holz went 1-2 with two RBI's and a walk while Curry went 2-3 with a double.
