Phoenix Split Chilly Doubleheader with Mounties

MONT ALTO, Pa.- The Wilson baseball team took on the visiting Mounties of Mount Aloysius College today in what was a chilly non-conference doubleheader. Wilson (7-3, 0-0 CSAC) extended their winning streak to seven in game one with a 9-4 win but dropped the second leg of the doubleheader with an 11-2 loss.

Game One: The Phoenix fell behind in the top of the third after the Mounties plated two runs off of a suicide squeeze and then a double steal that created some confusion for the Phoenix defense. Wilson stayed patient, however, and tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth. KJ Curry (Bowie, Md.) got the inning started with a bunt single and later moved up to third on a double by Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md.). Curry then came across the plate for the first Phoenix run as Dean Mercer (Dunedin, Fla., Clearwater Central Catholic) grounded out to second.

James Husar (Oxford, Conn.) then stepped in and brought home the tying run on a sacrifice fly to right field. The Mounties regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a bases-loaded walk, but the Phoenix responded quickly with a 4-run bottom half.

Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, Md., Watkins Mill) got the rally started with a walk and would later come around to score after a fielder's choice tied the game at three. KJ Curry then came up and singled up the middle to drive home Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, Pa.), giving Wilson a 4-3 lead. Brandon Cook kept the inning going with his second double of the day, which allowed another Phoenix run to score. Cook later came around to score after stealing third and advancing home on a wild throw by the catcher.

The Mounties added a run in the top of the sixth, but the Phoenix gave themselves some breathing room by putting up three runs in the next half-inning. Eli Klopp (College Park, Md., DeMatha Catholic) scored the first run by crossing home on a wild pitch before Dylan Procopio singled home, Kevin Finn. Brandon Cook continued his hot day at the plate with his third double which scored Procopio, giving Wilson a 9-4 lead. The Phoenix went on to pick up three outs in the seventh to secure the game one victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix combined for 9 runs on 7 hits in the first contest with Brandon Cook leading the charge by going 3-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBIs. KJ Curry finished game one by going 2-4 with an RBI while Dylan Procopio and Kevin Finn each added hits. Cam Nolet (Annapolis, Md.) earned his second win of the season on the mound, allowing 3 hits while striking out 6 batters in 5 innings of work. Max Little and Brandon Cook were solid in relief, combining for 2 innings with 1 hit and 3 strikeouts.

Game Two: Mount Aloysius jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in game two of the doubleheader after an RBI bunt single and a 2-run single. Jacob Whittington (Salisbury, Md.) got the Phoenix on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single that scored Juan Rosario, who singled to begin the inning. Wilson closed the gap to just one run in the next inning after Michael Mcgee (Frederick, Md., Thomas Johnson) brought home Dylan Procopio with a groundout to shortstop.

The Mounties scored two runs in the top of the third and added another run in the top of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead over the Phoenix. That lead would stand until the top of the seventh when they would add five more runs, cruising their way to an 11-2 win in game two.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson mustered just 5 hits in the second game while striking out 7 times at the plate. Jacob Whittington and Michael McGee picked up the only RBIs for the Phoenix. Kevin Ehrman (York, Pa., Central York) was dealt the loss on the mound, falling to 1-1 on the season.

Up Next: Wilson is scheduled to host Montclair State this Sunday in another doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
