READING, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team got their season started this afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader against the Lions of Albright College. The Phoenix (0-2, 0-0 CSAC) were defeated by the Lions (2-2, 0-0 MAC) by a score of 4-1 in the first game and a score of 5-4 in the second.
Game One: Sophomore
Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) got the nod for Wilson today as he struck out two on his way to retiring the side in the bottom half of the first inning. Skipping ahead to the top of the second inning, sophomore
Nick Quinn (Odenton, MD., St. Mary's) got things started for the Phoenix with a single to right field. Wilson would try to get things going but could not capitalize as Albright was able to close out the inning with no damage done. Later on, in the top of the third inning, the bats would come alive as sophomore
Cole Rinehart (Boonsboro, MD., Boonsboro) got the inning started with a single up the middle. Later on, still in the third, sophomore
Joseph Cofer (Dumfries, VA., Forest Park) and junior
KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) both drew walks as the Phoenix tried to spark the offense but left two men left on base. Wilson was able to score first in the game as
Quinn was able to reach home off a shot from freshman
Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic), pushing the score to 1-0 in favor of the Phoenix in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lions responded as they were able to tie the game up on a triple and then take the lead on the next at-bat off a two-run home run. Albright was able to add one more run before the inning was over, as they would go on to win the first game by a final of 4-1.
Inside the Box Score: Wilson earned one run on six hits and no errors while their opponent finished with four runs on five hits and one error.
Quinn led the attack as he finished going 2-3 with a single and triple.
Mercer,
Rinehart, and sophomore
Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill) all finished going 1-3 while senior
James Husar (Oxford, CT., CCBC Essex (Md.)) went 1-1.
Nolet finished going 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts, five walks, one hit, and one earned run.
Game Two: The Phoenix got things going early as they were able to score one run off two hits and one error in the second inning. After
Mercer singled to the right side of the field, he later was able to advance to second off an error on the next at-bat. A few batters later, junior
Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., Westmoreland Community College) hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored
Mercer, pushing the score to 1-0 Wilson. During their next opportunity to bat, in the top of the third, the offense continued to score as they wracked up three runs off two hits. Sophomore
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) got the inning started by taking first base after getting hit, next batter, sophomore
Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills), advanced him to third after he singled through the right side of the field. A few batters later,
Husar was able to drive in two runs off a single up the middle, as the Phoenix extended their lead to 3-0. Moments later, Wilson added one more run as
Mercer stole home, giving the Phoenix a 4-0 lead headed into the bottom of the third. After Albright added two in the bottom of the third, and one more in the bottom of the fourth, they were able to tie the game up and take the lead in the bottom of the seventh as the Lions drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded; giving Albright the 5-4 advantage.
Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished with four runs on eight hits and three errors while their opponent finished with five runs on six hits and two errors.
Curry and
Rosario both earned two hits as they finished going 2-4 and 2-3, respectively.
Quinn,
Mercer, Husar, and
Procopio each added one hit. Sophomore
Dereck Ivey (Fairfield, PA., Fairfield) started the game going 3.1 innings with two strikeouts and one hit while sophomore
Max Little (Crestview, FL., Spangdahlem) pitched 2.2 and
Cook pitched 0.2.
Up Next: The baseball team will face Penn State Schuylkill tomorrow, March 2, in a nonconference doubleheader at noon on the campus of Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md.
