Defenders Down Phoenix, 63-55


CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.- The Wilson women's basketball team traveled to Clarks Summit University this afternoon for a CSAC match up against the Defenders. The Phoenix (2-16, 1-13 CSAC) came up short against the Defenders (16-5, 11-3), falling 63-55. 

How It Happened: Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Great Bridge Christian) scored the first six points of the game for the Phoenix, pushing her team out to an early 6-5 advantage.

Later on in the first quarter, and the Defenders leading 16-13, Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) was able to tie the game with a three coming off an assist from Ta'Niya Kees (Baltimore, Md., Our Lady of Mount Carmel School). Clarks Summit hit a three-pointer to end the quarter to give themselves a 19-16 lead at the end of the first. 

Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii, University Laboratory School) scored on consecutive possessions for Wilson to give them a 20-19 lead to start the second quarter. After the Defenders tied the game at 20, Samira Murphy scored on a layup that was followed by a three from Ta'Niya Kees. Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va., Varina) extended the score to 28-20 with a three-pointer to cap off an 8-0 scoring run for Wilson.

The Defenders responded in a big way, going on a 13-2 run to end the half, going into the locker room leading 33-30. Wilson finished the first half shooting 34% from the field while shooting 33% from three. 

Wilson trailed 37-33 early in the third quarter before buckets from Samira Murphy and Michaela Singer tied things at 37. Clarks Summit preceded to go on a 12-3 run to take a 49-40 lead with 3:10 to play in the third quarter.

The Phoenix fired back with three-pointers from Samira Murphy and Jordyn Day to bring the score to 49-46. Clarks Summit would add a free throw to end the quarter, giving them a slight four-point lead heading into the final period. 

Midway through the fourth quarter, after Tioleaoauli Posiulai scored to put the Phoenix down five, the Defenders knocked down a three to go-ahead 59-51. Posiulai would score again for the Phoenix before Clarks Summit would close out the game with four straight points to give themselves a 63-55 win. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix finished the game shooting 39% from the field and 30% from beyond the arc. Samira Murphy led the team with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Ta'Niya Kees, Michaela Singer, Jordyn Day and Tioleaoauli Posiulai each finished with 8 points as well for Wilson. 

Up Next: Wilson will travel to Christendom College on Monday for a non-conference game against the Crusaders. The tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
