Phoenix Handle Crusaders


FRONT ROYAL, Va.- The Wilson women's basketball team took on the Crusaders of Christendom College this evening in a non-conference contest. The Phoenix (3-17, 1-13 CSAC) earned their third victory of the season by cruising past the Crusaders, 70-48. 

How It Happened: Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) and Ta'Niya Kees (Baltimore, Md., Our Lady of Mount Carmel School) opened up the game with back-to-back threes for the Phoenix, but the Crusaders led 10-6 after 6 minutes of play. Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Great Bridge Christian) connected for the third three of the game for the Phoenix, and Ta'Niya Kees would later add another to tie the game at 12. The Crusaders, however, ended the first quarter of play on top 18-14.

After falling behind 21-14 early in the second quarter, Wilson exploded on a 23-2 run and would close out the half on top 37-23. Samira Murphy and Ta'Niya Kees combined for 28 of the 37 Phoenix points in the first half with the team shooting 36% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc. 

Christendom cut the Phoenix lead to seven midway through the third quarter, but a three from Michaela Singer, a bucket from Madison Ross (New Oxford, Pa., New Oxford)and a couple of late free throws put the Phoenix back up by 15, capping off an 8-0 run. 

Samira Murphy hit a three early in the fourth quarter that was followed by two straight threes from Jordyn Day (Richmond, VA., Varina), giving Wilson a commanding 22-point advantage. The Phoenix would push their lead out to 27 before eventually closing out the game on top by 22. 

Inside the Box Score: Samira Murphy paced the Phoenix with 22 points and 9 rebounds while Ta'Niya Kees added 15 points 4 assists and a team-high 7 steals. Jordyn Day also finished with 12 points, all of which came in the second half. Wilson made a season-high 11 three-pointers, shooting 33% from beyond the arc. The Phoenix also turned in a season-high 20 steals. 

Up Next: Wilson will hit the road again this Wednesday as they travel to Cedar Crest College for a CSAC contest against the Falcons at 7:00 p.m.
