Wildcats Pounce Past Phoenix


MARCY, N.Y.,- The Wilson men's volleyball team played their third match in two days today, facing off against the Wildcats of SUNY Poly. Wilson (1-4, 0-4 NEAC) dropped the match in three sets, falling by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-7. 

How It Happened: After Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) tied the first set at two apiece, the Wildcats rattled off four straight points to take a 6-2 lead. Wilson scored the next six of nine points to find themselves trailing 9-8. SUNY Poly was able to push their lead back up to 3 points, but the Phoenix continued to answer back, getting within one with consecutive points. The Wildcats took control of the first set when they were leading 17-15 and scored four consecutive points to move the score to 20-15. SUNY Poly ended the first set on top 25-17, finishing with 12 kills. Wilson ended the set with 6 kills on 21 attempts with Ian Firestone leading with 3 kills. 

Wilson held an early 4-2 advantage before SUNY Poly scored 5 straight points to take a 7-4 lead. The Wildcats later led 15-9 but Wilson fought back to bring themselves within 2 points. The hosts took a commanding 23-13 lead by scoring 8 straight points and would end the set with back-to-back points to win 25-14. Wilson finished with 7 kills on 18 attempts with Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) leading Wilson with 2. 

The Wildcats got off to a hot start in the third set, taking a quick 12-2 lead over Wilson and later pushed their way to a 19-6 advantage. SUNY Poly went on to complete the match sweep finishing the third set on top 25-7. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix finished the match with 15 kills on 57 attempts and were led by Ian Firestone who finished with 5 kills. Firestone also led the Phoenix with 8 assists while added 4 kills and 3 assists. Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary), Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, Pa., Cumberland Valley Christian) and Noah Wickenheiser (Cresco, Pa., Notre Dame) were solid on defense for the Phoenix, combining for 12 of the 20 Wilson digs. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will travel to Cairn University on Friday to take on the Highlanders at 7:00 p.m.
