Eagles Screech Past Phoenix


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.-  The Wilson women's basketball was in action today against the visiting Eagles of St. Elizabeth in Colonial States Athletic Conference action. St. Elizabeth used a big second quarter to upend the Phoenix, 93-58, behind 30 points from Rakiyah Sellers. With the loss, the Phoenix fall to 2-14 overall and 1-11 in CSAC play. 

How It Happened: After the Eagles scored the first four points of the contest, Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va., Varina) got the Phoenix on the board with a deep three-pointer. Later on in the quarter, and trailing 10-7, Wilson pounded the ball inside where Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii, University Laboratory School) connected on a layup. A late three from St. Elizabeth gave them a 13-9 lead to end the first period. 

The Eagles kicked off the second quarter with a three before Jordyn Day hit a three of her own to get Wilson back within four. St. Elizabeth started to heat up as they began on what would be a 14-0 run to take a 30-12 lead over the Phoenix. The Eagles were able to extend their advantage up to 23 at the half, leading 45-22. Wilson shot just 22% from the field in the first half and 23% from three while the Eagles finished the half shooting 51%, including 63% in the second quarter.

St. Elizabeth began the third quarter with a quick 5-0 scoring spurt to move ahead 50-22 and would later extend their lead up to 34 points with 3 minutes to play in the period. Ta'Niya Kees (Baltimore, Md., Our Lady of Mount Carmel School) was able to put together a strong finish to the quarter, scoring five straight points to put the score at 68-39 in favor of the visitors. 

The Eagles quickly extended their lead up to 43 with a 16-0 run to start the fourth quarter and would continue to roll to a 93-58 victory over the Phoenix. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix finished the game shooting 26% from the field and 27% from three. Ta'Niya Kees led Wilson with 19 points and 8 rebounds while Jordyn Day added 15 points on 5 three-pointers. Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) ended the night with 9 points while Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Great Bridge Christian) had 8 points and 9 rebounds. 

Up Next: Wilson will host Bryn Athyn this Wednesday in CSAC play with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m.
