Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Beat Bryn Athyn, 72-64

BRYN ATHYN, Pa.- The Wilson men's basketball team captured their third straight victory this evening with a 72-64 win over conference foe, Bryn Athyn College. The Phoenix improve to 5-9 on the season and move to 2-2 inside of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.

How It Happened: Wilson began the game with an 8-0 run off of consecutive three-pointers coming from Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Texas, Forest Park) and Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) before Powell went on to knock down a pair of free throws at the line. With the Phoenix later holding a 13-5 lead, the Lions roared back on an 11-0 run to take a 16-13 advantage.

After a stretch of back-and-forth play from the two teams, the score sat at 21-20 in favor of the Lions with just over five minutes to play in the half. The Phoenix would use the last minutes to go on a 15-3 run to end the half and take a 35-24 lead into the locker room.

Zachary Powell and Adrian Thomas (Germantown, Md., Northwest HS) led the late Phoenix charge by scoring 13 of the 15 points to end the period. Despite leading by 11 at the break, the Phoenix shot just 32% from the field and 23% from beyond the arc. Zachary Powell led his team with 15 points in the first half while Adrian Thomas had 10 points and 8 rebounds to nearly complete the first half double-double.

After Wilson began the second half by extending their lead to 13, the Lions would use the next 9 minutes to chip away at their deficit, and with 11 minutes to play Bryn Athyn jumped ahead 48-47. Later, with just over 5 minutes to play and the Phoenix trailing 59-56, Rashaan Bean drilled a huge three from the corner to knot things at 59.

The Phoenix once again found themselves down three with three minutes to go, but Bean, who came up big down the stretch, was able to score on an off-balanced jumper and get the foul for a chance to tie the game.

After Bean hit the free throw, Darryl Garib (Dallas, Texas, Forest Park) came up with a steal on the defensive end and found Bean for the go-ahead layup. Wilson was able to shut down the Lions in the final two minutes and cash in on their free-throw opportunities to close out the game outscoring the hosts, 12-1.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix shot 38% from the field for the game, including 44% in the second half. A key difference in the game came at the foul line where the Phoenix, who have struggled from the line throughout the year, hit on 18 of 22 attempts while the Lions shot just 11 of 19. Adrian Thomas turned in a solid all-around effort with 23 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Zachary Powell finished with 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting and pulled down 7 rebounds. Rashaan Bean was the final Phoenix player to score in double figures with 15.

Up Next: Wilson will travel to Keystone College this Saturday for another CSAC contest with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
