Phoenix Deterred by Defenders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team tipped-off the New Year with a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) game against the visiting Defenders of Clarks Summit University. The Phoenix (1-7, 0-4 CSAC) were defeated by the Defenders (6-4, 2-2 CSAC) by a score of 90-61. 

How It Happened: After trading opening buckets, Clarks Summit started a 12-2 run that tipped the score in their favor, 14-4. Ta'Niya Kees was able to end the run with a deep three that cut the deficit to seven points. The Phoenix would end the first quarter trailing by a score of 27-11. 

Senior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) opened the second quarter by knocking down a three-pointer that was assisted by Kees. Later on in the quarter, junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA, Annville-Cleona) connected on a fast-break jumper that brought the score to 37-21, still in favor of the Defenders. Wilson would enter halftime trailing, 41-24. 

In the third, Day got the scoring started again as she sunk another three while freshman Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA, Great Bridge Christian) drained a layup on the next Phoenix possession. Wilson controlled the paint in this quarter as they were able to outscore Clarks Summit 8-4. The Phoenix entered the final quarter of play down by a score of 65-40. 

Opening up the fourth, sophomore Tori Cole (Orange Park, FL, Orange Park) knocked down a jumper in the paint as Wilson continued to score down low. Later on in the half, Singer sunk a three that was assisted by Cole. The Phoenix would go on to be defeated by a final score of 90-61.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished the game 31% while the Defenders finished shooting 49%. In her first game of the season, Kees led the Phoenix with 23 points while Day and Murphy followed with 13 points and 12 points, respectively. 

Up Next: Wilson will continue CSAC play as they get set to take on the Lions of Bryn Athyn (2-9, 1-3 CSAC) on Tuesday, January 7, at 6:00 pm.
