Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Fend Off Defenders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson men's basketball team kicked off the new year with a 77-68 victory over their Colonial States Athletic Conference counterpart, Clarks Summit University. With the win, the Phoenix improve to 4-9 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

How It Happened: Wilson got off to a hot start from beyond the arc with their first three buckets coming from three as they jumped out to a 9-3 lead.

The Defenders responded with a 7-0 run to take a 10-9 lead but not before Kyle Hoffman (Waynesboro, Pa, Waynesboro) put the Phoenix back in front with a fast-break layup. Later on in the half, and the Phoenix leading 22-19, Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, Md., Springbrook HS) drilled a triple to give the Phoenix a six-point lead.

Clarks Summit answered with a three of their own, but a 13-0 run by the Phoenix put them ahead 38-22 with just over two minutes to play.

Wilson was able to take a 15 point lead into the half after hitting 9 first-half three-pointers and shooting 47% from the field.

Clarks Summit couldn't have asked for a better start to the second half after struggling in the first. The Defenders used a 15-2 run to get right back within five of the Phoenix with 14 minutes to play. After Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) scored on a layup for the Phoenix, the Defenders hit a three-pointer to bring their deficit to just four.

With just under 10 minutes in the half, and the Phoenix leading 53-52, Jeremiah Carter-Johnson (Richmond, Va., Mills E. Godwin) and Adrian Thomas (Germantown, Md, Northwest HS) scored on back-to-back layups to put the Phoenix up five.

Minutes later Thomas knocked down a jumper to extend the lead to seven with five minutes to go. The Phoenix were able to make some free throws down the stretch to hang on for a 77-68 conference win.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix shot a solid 44% from the field and 39% from three-point land on 11-28 shooting. Zachary Powell led the Phoenix with 17 points while Anthony Desruisseau added 15. Adrian Thomas also had a solid night with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Up Next: The Phoenix are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Bryn Athyn for another CSAC match up, set to begin at 8:00 p.m.
