Phoenix Downed by Gators

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Wilson College women's basketball team squared off against the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University on the road as they continued Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play. The Phoenix (2-14, 1-10 CSAC) were taken down by the Gators (12-5, 9-2 CSAC) by a score of 72-50.

How It Happened: Notre Dame started the first quarter on an 8-2 run before senior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) was able to snap streak by connecting on a fastbreak layup. Later on in the quarter, freshman Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA, Great Bridge Christian) would add a three followed by a layup from freshman Ta'Niya Kees (Baltimore, Md., Our Lady of Mount Carmel School) as Wilson would finish the first quarter trailing by a score of 17-10. 

In the second, Day got the scoring started with a shot from beyond the arc, while Murphy added her second three of the game shortly after. Seconds later, Murphy hit another three-pointer that put the Phoenix within two points. The Phoenix continued to battle throughout the quarter as they entered halftime trailing by five, 32-27. 

Notre Dame started the third on a 17-6 run before freshman Madison Ross (New Oxford, PA, New Oxford) ended the run with a jumper. Shortly after,
Day drained another three-pointer followed by two foul shots from a technical foul from the Gators. Freshman Jordan Yeager (Waynesboro, PA, Greencastle-Antrim) added two more points as Wilson would enter the final quarter trailing, 51-42. 

Wilson struggled to get their offense going in the fourth as Notre Dame jumped on an 18-2 run. Kees was able to end drought with a three followed by
Day, who added another soon after. The Phoenix would go on to be defeated by a final score of 72-50.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished the game shooting 27% from the field while their opponent finished shooting 46%. Day led the Phoenix with 19 points while Murphy finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds on her way to her third double-double this season. Kees and Yeager added six points and four points, respectively, while Ross and junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA, Annville-Cleona) each finished with two. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will host the Eagles of the College of St. Elizabeth (11-5, 8-2 CSAC) this Saturday, February 1, at 1:00 pm.
