Phoenix Prevail Over Highlanders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team hosted the Highlanders of Cairn University earlier this afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matchup. The Phoenix (2-11, 1-8 CSAC) defeated the Highlanders (1-16, 1-7 CSAC) by a final score of 70-69. With this win, head coach Matt Allen earns his 100th victory for his career!

How It Happened: After Cairn opened the game up with a three-point basket, senior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) answered right back with a three of her own. Shortly after, freshman Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA, Great Bridge Christian) connected on a layup and shot from beyond the arc that pushed the score in their favor, 8-6. Junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA, Annville-Cleona), sophomore Brittany Washburn (Sandy Hook, VA, Salem Christian), and Day all added three-pointers of their own before the quarter was over. Wilson finished out the first quarter leading, 19-14.

In the second, sophomore Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI, University Laboratory School) made two layups to start the scoring for the Phoenix. Later on in the quarter, after freshman Jordan Yeager (Waynesboro, PA, Greencastle-Antrim) hit a layup, Murphy tallied another three that put Wilson up by three with just over two minutes remaining in the half. The Phoenix entered halftime leading by a score of 34-31.

In the third quarter, freshman Ta'Niya Kees (Baltimore, Md., Our Lady of Mount Carmel School) got things started by corralling a steal and connecting on the fastbreak layup. Cairn, however, hung around and eventually pulled within one point after hitting a deep three. The Phoenix responded by going on a 9-2 run with a layup and foul shot coming from Murphy and Singer, respectively, while freshman Madison Ross (New Oxford, PA, New Oxford) and Day each drained a three. The Highlanders stormed back and eventually knotted the game up again at 47 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. Wilson would enter the final quarter of play leading, 51-50.

Day started the scoring in this quarter with a layup followed by a jumper from Murphy that put Wilson up three. As the two opponents battled back and forth, Cairn was able to tie the game up at 58 apiece with seven minutes left. The Highlanders then took a six-point lead with just over four and a half minutes remaining. But, the Phoenix responded by jumping on a 9-0 run that flipped the score and gave them a three-point lead with thirty seconds left on the clock. After Day connected on a foul shot, Cairn knocked down a last-second three as Wilson went on to win by a final score of 70-69.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix finished shooting 34% while their opponent also finished shooting 34%. Murphy led Wilson with a double-double as she ended her night with 18 points and ten rebounds. Day and Kees also finished in double figures as they went on to add 15 points and 12 points, respectively. With this victory, the Phoenix earn their first conference win of the season while head coach Matt Allen earns his 100th career victory.

Up Next: The women's basketball team will hit the road to take on Cyclones of Centenary University (8-6, 4-4 CSAC) on Saturday, January 25, at 1:00 pm.
