Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Highlanders Rally to Down Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson men's basketball team took on the Highlanders of Cairn University this evening in another Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matchup. The Phoenix brought a five-game winning streak into the contest but saw their hot streak come to an end as the Highlanders defeated them 86-81. With the loss, the Phoenix drop to 7-10 on the season while moving to 4-3 in conference play.

How It Happened: With 13 minutes left in the first half and the score sitting tied at 10, the Highlanders started on what would be a 10-4 run with a layup. Down 20-14 the Phoenix connected on back-to-back shots to get back within one. Later on in the half, after Darryl Garib (Dallas, Texas, Forest Park) gave the Phoenix a one-point edge, the Highlanders scored four unanswered to regain the three-point lead.

With 1:30 to play and the Phoenix trailing 34-31, Kyle Hoffman (Waynesboro, Pa., Waynesboro) found Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, Md., Springbrook HS) open for a jumper before Hoffman would then score on an acrobatic layup in the paint on the next possession, giving Wilson a 35-34 lead. After a Cairn turnover, the Phoenix took the ball with time winding down in the half. Kyle Hoffman was able to find a driving lane and hit a turn around floater just as time expired to cap off a 6-0 run to end the half. At the break, the Phoenix led 37-34 after shooting 36% from the floor.

Wilson quickly extended their lead early in the second half as Christian Evans and Adrian Thomas scored to put the Phoenix ahead 41-34. The Phoenix were able to push their lead even further moments later, after Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Texas, Forest Park) and Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) connected on consecutive three-pointers to make the score 49-38.

With 10 minutes to play Wilson held their largest lead of the game (13) before the Highlanders started to chip away at the deficit. By the five-minute mark, Cairn had cut the Phoenix lead to just five, and with three and a half minutes to go, they had it down to just one. Rashaan Bean gave the Phoenix a little breathing room with a three-pointer that was followed by two free throws from Zachary Powell, giving Wilson an 80-75 lead.

The Highlanders answered in a big way by going on a 7-0 run to take an 82-80 lead with 1:12 remaining. Christian Evans (Baltimore, Md., Our Lady Of Mount Carmel) got fouled for the Phoenix on the following possession, and with a chance to tie the game was only able to knock down 1 of 2 free throws. After the Phoenix fouled and Cairn hit both foul shots, Wilson went down the court looking to tie the game. Zachary Powell found himself with an open look from three but couldn't connect, however, the Phoenix scooped up the offensive rebound to give themselves one more chance at the tie. Unfortunately, Wilson was called for an offensive foul as the Highlanders closed out the game with two free throws to take home the 86-81 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished the game shooting 46% from the field and just 27% from three. The Phoenix also shot a solid 75% from the foul line going 18 for 24. Rashaan Bean led the Phoenix with 18 points and 8 rebounds while Adrian Thomas (Germantown, Md., Northwest HS) added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Zachary Powell was the last Phoenix to finish in double figures with 10. Kyle Hoffman and Darryl Garib turned in solid efforts with Hoffman putting up 7 points and 4 assists and Garib finishing with 7 points and 8 rebounds.

Up Next: The Phoenix will travel to York College on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
