ROSEMONT, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team traveled to take on the Ravens of Rosemont College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matchup. The Phoenix (1-11, 0-8 CSAC) were narrowly defeated by the Ravens (5-9, 3-4) by a final score of 61-60.
How It Happened: Senior
Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) got the scoring started for Wilson as she opened the game up with a three. Shortly after, freshman
Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA, Great Bridge Christian) converted three the hard way, with a layup and a foul-shot that followed. Then, on the next Phoenix possession, sophomore
Tori Cole (Orange Park, FL, Orange Park) connected on a layup that put Wilson up 8-0 four minutes into the contest. Rosemont would storm back and narrow the gap but the Phoenix would end the first quarter still ahead, 14-11.
In the second quarter, both teams continued to battle. Junior
Michaela Singer (Annville, PA, Annville-Cleona) collected a steal and connected on the fastbreak layup that followed. But, the Ravens responded with a three that knotted the game up at 18 apiece.
Murphy tried to get things going by knocking down a three, but Rosemont was able to answer again with another three that tied things up again, this time at 21. The Ravens would enter halftime with a slight edge at 29-26.
Wilson opened the third quarter on a 5-2 run that tied the game at 31 apiece. The two opponents then spent the next minute battling for the lead as there were two lead changes and two ties in that stretch alone.
Day ended the back and forth with a three that put the Phoenix ahead, 38-35. Rosemont went on to end the quarter on a 6-2 run that put them ahead, 41-40.
After
Singer scored a layup, the Ravens responded with back-to-back threes and a layup that put them ahead by seven points.
Singer ended the run with a three that cut the deficit to four with just under seven minutes remaining. As Rosemont started to extend their lead again,
Day hit huge three that cut the Ravens lead to just three points. Later on in the quarter, with Wilson down five,
Singer knocked down a three with 19 seconds left that brought the Phoenix within two. After Rosemont scored a free-throw, freshman
Ta'Niya Kees (Baltimore, Md., Our Lady of Mount Carmel School) added a fastbreak layup with 10 seconds left that brought Wilson within one. After forcing a turnover, the Phoenix could not connect on the last second shot as they would go on to be defeated by a final score of 61-60.
Inside the Box Score: Singer led Wilson with 14 points while
Cole added a double-double; finishing with, a season-high, 13 points and 16 rebounds.
Murphy,
Kees, and
Day rounded out the scoring with 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. The Phoenix finished shooting 32% while their opponent finished shooting 31%.
Up Next: The women's basketball team will host the Highlanders of Cairn University (1-15, 1-7 CSAC) this Saturday, January 18, at 1:00 pm in another CSAC showdown.
