Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Stay Hot With Double O.T. Win

ROSEMONT, Pa.- The Wilson men's basketball earned their fifth straight victory this evening, as they took on the defending CSAC champion Rosemont Ravens. The Phoenix were able to escape with a 90-80 victory in what was an exciting double-overtime thriller. With the win, Wilson improves to 7-9 overall and is now 4-2 inside CSAC play.

How It Happened: Neither team was able to gain much of an edge in the first half until the eight-minute mark when Rosemont took a six-point lead and later pushed it up to nine with just under a minute to play in the half.
Trailing by nine, the Phoenix used three free throws at the end of the half to cut their deficit to just six at the break. The Phoenix struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 27% from the field and 14% from three while the Ravens shot close to 50% from inside the arc.

Wilson found themselves trailing by 14 early in the second half, which was the largest lead of the game for the Ravens. Down 44-30, the Phoenix didn't panic and used an 18-4 run to march back and tie the game at 48 with 8 minutes to play. Rosemont responded with an 8-0 run to recapture the lead, but once again the Phoenix stayed calm as they began to chip away at the Ravens' lead.

Trailing by 7 with 1:13 remaining, Christian Evans (Baltimore, Md., Our Lady Of Mount Carmel) hit two free throws that were followed by a steal on the defensive end from Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Texas, Forest Park). Bean brought the Phoenix closer with a jumper on the other end to bring the score to 63-60 before a Wilson timeout with 30 seconds to play.

After Rosemont turned the ball over again, Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, Md., Springbrook HS) knocked down a three-pointer to knot the score at 63. Rosemont couldn't come up with a game-winning basket on the offensive end as the game went into the first overtime.

Midway through the first overtime, the Phoenix led 72-67 before Rosemont knocked down a three to bring themselves within two. After Wilson missed a jumper, the Ravens grabbed the rebound and were able to draw a foul on the offensive end. Rosemont tied things at 72, but the Phoenix regained the advantage when Rashaan Bean got fouled and hit one of two free throws.

Wilson got a stop on defense, and Bean gave his team a three-point lead as he made two foul shots with 58 seconds to play. The Ravens then drew a foul, but could only manage to make one of their two free throws. Fortunately for them, they came up with a steal on defense and drew another foul from the Phoenix.

Once again Rosemont could only cash in on one foul shot as Adrian Thomas (Germantown, Md., Northwest HS) pulled down the rebound for the Phoenix. Thomas, a 68% free throw shooter on the season, made one of two to give Wilson a two-point lead with six seconds to play. Rosemont inbounded the ball after a timeout and drove the length of the floor as they were able to get off a shot and tie the game at the buzzer to send the game to a second overtime.

Leading 79-78 early in the second overtime, Christian Evans drove down the lane and found Xavier Dowtin (Oxon Hill, Md., Oxon Hill HS), who knocked down a huge three to give the Phoenix a four-point cushion. That three sparked the Phoenix, who were able to pick up big stops on the defensive end as Rosemont began to foul down the stretch. In the last minute and a half the Phoenix shot 8 for 10 from the free-throw line to help outscore the Ravens 14-4 in overtime and come away with the victory.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson shot just 32% from the field in the game and 20% from three, but were able to shoot 84% from the foul line on 38 of 45 shooting. Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn)led the Phoenix with 27 points while also snagging 12 rebounds. Powell also came up with four blocks and shot a perfect 11 of 11 from the foul line. Christian Evans had a solid game as well with a season-high 19 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 15 of 16 from the charity stripe. Adrian Thomas finished with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists as well for the Phoenix.

Up Next: Wilson will host Cairn University this Saturday in another CSAC battle with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
