Phoenix Split in Tri-Match

CHAMBERSBURG. Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team hosted a tri-match earlier this afternoon where they faced off against the Lions of Albright College and the Colonels of Wilkes University. The Phoenix split the matches, beating the Lions three sets to none and losing to the Colonels three sets to one. 

Match 1: In the match against Albright, Wilson took the match by a score of three sets to none with scores of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-20. Sophomore Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) led the Phoenix with, a career-high, 21 kills during this match. Sophomore Tia Jones (Springfield, VA., Lake Braddock) had a huge day for Wilson, she finished with six kills, five aces, six blocks, and six digs. Junior Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fla., Coral Springs) also came out swinging, she finished with five kills, three aces, and one block. Throughout the match freshman Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, PA., James Buchanan) kept supplying the Phoenix offense as she went on to finish with 32 assists, she also collected five digs. 

Altogether, the Phoenix finished with 35 kills on 76 attempts against 10 errors for a hitting percentage of .329. The Lions would finish with 18 kills on 73 attempts against 18 errors for a hitting percentage of .000. Wilson would wrap up the match with six aces and three blocks. 

Match 2: In the second match, the Phoenix were defeated by the Colonels. Wilkes would take the first two sets with scores of 25-14 and 27-25. In the third, Wilson would rally from behind and take the set 26-24. In the fourth set, the Colonels would win 25-20, giving them the match, three sets to one.

Posiulai and Jones would lead the Phoenix with 19 and 18 kills, respectively, while Farnes finished with five. Mongold would finish with a season-high 40 assists and three aces. Freshman Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) racked up two aces and 15 digs. 

Wilson started pulling everything together in this match as they gave Wilkes just about everything they could handle. Overall, the Phoenix had 48 kills on 135 attempts against 22 errors while their opponents finished with 47 kills on 144 attempts against 23 errors.

Up Next: The women's volleyball team will be back in action this Wednesday, September 11, where they will travel to Penn State Harrisburg in a nonconference match starting 7:00 p.m.
