Quakers Deny Phoenix

RICHMOND, In. - The Wilson College field hockey team traveled to Earlham College for a non-conference matchup. The host Quakers (2-1) topped the Phoenix (1-1) by a final score of 1-0 in overtime.

How It Happened: The Quakers put pressure on the Phoenix defense from the outset of the match and had their first shot on goal before the first minute had passed off the scoreboard. The Phoenix defense refused to break early on as junior goalkeeper Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) kept the Quakers out of the cage. After a quiet first quarter, the Phoenix had five penalty corners in the second quarter but were unable to convert. As the defenses continued to dominate play, neither team was able to put a shot on goal in the second quarter. After halftime the action picked up in the third quarter with Quakers taking two shots on goal, but again Nayadley denied the hosts of a goal. Late in the quarter, the Phoenix had their best opportunity at a goal as junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) took aim at the cage but was stopped by the Quakers goalie. In the fourth quarter, the Quakers dominated offensively with a barrage of shots and penalty corners but Nayadley collected three saves in the quarter and the two teams headed to overtime. Just four and a half minutes into the extra session the Quakers were awarded a penalty corner and executed it to perfection as they finally got past the Phoenix defense and put a shot in from the right post to claim the overtime victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Quakers held a 26-1 advantage in shots including a 11-1 edge in shots on goal. Nayadley tallied 10 saves on the day and the hosts enjoyed an 18-6 edge in penalty corners. Singer posted the only shot attempt for the Phoenix.

Up Next: The road trip continues for the Phoenix as they will be back in action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio versus Ohio Wesleyan University.
