Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hornets Sting Phoenix

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson men's soccer team played host to the Hornets of Shenandoah University this evening in a nonconference match. The Phoenix (1-2) were shutout by a tough Shenandoah opponent, 2-0.

How it Happened: Shenandoah got the scoring started in the sixteenth minute of the contest after a defensive save by Wilson led to a corner kick for the Hornets. Off the corner, the ball found its way to the middle of the box where William Majano was able to get a foot on the ball and find the left side of the net to put the Hornets up 1-0.

The Phoenix were unable to generate much offensively as they found themselves trailing at the half. In the first half, they were outshot 5-2 and allowed Shenandoah to finish the period with 9 corner kicks.

Shenandoah continued their offensive flurry early in the second half as they nearly scored five minutes in but another defensive save by the Phoenix prevented the Hornets from taking the 2-0 lead.

The Phoenix managed a few solid chances in the half with shots from Victor Celleri and Garrick Hill (Chambersburg, Pa., Chambersburg) but could not convert on the opportunities. Celleri's shot went just wide of the net while Hill's was snatched by the keeper at the top of the net.

In the seventy-ninth minute, Cody Kilbourn of Shenandoah sent a beautiful ball ahead to teammate Chase Greene who broke away from the Phoenix defense and scored to give the Hornets a late 2-0 advantage.

Wilson never found their groove offensively as the Hornets walked away with their second victory of the season.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix were outshot 14-4 in the game with shots on goal 8-3 in favor of the Hornets. A big difference in the game came from corner kick opportunities which also favored the Hornets 13-1. Garrick Hill led the Phoenix with two shots while goalkeeper Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, Pa., Cumberland Valley Christian) collected four saves.

Up Next: Wilson will travel to Delaware Valley on Saturday for a nonconference match set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
