Field Hockey Falls to Seahawks

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team hosted the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland this afternoon in a nonconference match. The Phoenix (3-6, 0-0) fell to the Seahawks (9-0, 0-0) by a final score of 2-0.

How It Happened: Both teams battled for possession early on, but St. Mary's was able to strike first as they were able to beat the keeper and flip the score in their favor, 1-0. The Seahawks took advantage of their six penalty corners in this quarter as they were able to fire off eight shots in the first period of play. Skipping ahead to the second quarter, the Phoenix defense would come up big as they were able to limit the Seahawks offense to just one shot and one penalty corner. Wilson would enter halftime trialing, 1-0. 

In the third, St. Mary's was able to strike again. This time they gathered a rebound in front of the net and launch it back on goal, making the score 2-0 with just over 4 minutes remaining in the quarter. The Phoenix would start to gain some momentum as they were able to flip the field several times on counter opportunities but could not capitalize. In the final period of play, junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) was able to get a shot off in front of the net that was saved by the Seahawk goalkeeper. Despite a valiant effort, Wilson would lose by a final score of 2-0.

Inside the Box Score: Shots were in favor of St. Mary's 22-1 while corners were 17-1, also in favor of the Seahawks. Junior goalkeeper Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) went on to finish with 13 saves on the match while Singer would lead the team in shots. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will be back in action on Wednesday, October 2, where they will travel to take on the Blazers of Hood College (1-10, 0-0) starting at 4:00 p.m.
