Phoenix Dominate Blazers

FREDERICK, Md. - The Wilson College field hockey team hit the road for a non-conference match-up with Hood College. The Phoenix (4-6) defeated the Blazers (1-11) by a final score of 3-0.

How It Happened: The Phoenix offense got going early as freshman Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del. , Caesar Rodney) fired the first shot of the match just 41 seconds into the first quarter. In the seventh minute a three shot barrage led to the first Phoenix goal. Junior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) fired a shot that was blocked, freshman Autumn Irwin (Garland, Maine, Dexter Regional) corralled it and ripped another shot that was saved by the Blazer keeper but freshman Alexis Alleman (Shippensburg, PA., Shippensburg) was able to gather the loose ball and put it into the cage for a 1-0 Phoenix lead. During the second quarter the offensive attack continued for the Phoenix as the visitors took seven shots but it was the final one of those shots, which came with less than a minute to play in the half, that found the back of the cage off the stick of junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) with an assist from sophomore Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA., Midd-West) to give the team a 2-0 lead at halftime. The Phoenix defense was equally as impressive in the first half as they held the Blazers without a shot attempt. Despite getting six more shots off in the third quarter, the Phoenix could not add to their lead, but again the defense was solid and did not allow a shot attempt in the period. Just three minutes into the final quarter the Phoenix added another goal as freshman Abigail Rosenberry (Shippensburg, PA., Shippensburg) scored with an assist from Pflumm to make the final score 3-0.

Inside the Box Score: Fpr the match the Phoenix held a 22-1 edge in shots including a 14-0 advantage in shots on goal. The visitors also held an 11-0 edge in penalty corners. Singer tallied her team lead tying third goal of the season and Sheaffer's assist gives her the team lead in points with 8 on the year.
