Phoenix Sweep Giants in CSAC Opener

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play today as they took on the Giants of Keystone College. The Phoenix (8-6, 1-0 CSAC) defeated the Giants (1-6, 0-1 CSAC) three sets to none with scores of 25-21, 27-25, and 25-17.

How It Happened: Keystone pushed the score out to an early 7-2 lead before Wilson jumped on a 10-5 run to tie the first set up at 12-12. The two opponents continued to duke it out until the match was evened up again, this time at 17 apiece. That's when the Phoenix would start an 8-4 run to close out the set by a final score of 25-21.

In the second set, Wilson was the one to jump out to an early 7-2 lead. Keystone would answer back and score five unanswered points, tipping the score in their favor 8-7. Both teams battled in this one as there were eight ties and lead changes in this set alone. The Phoenix would even things up at 25 apiece and score two unanswered points, giving Wilson the set by a score of 27-25. 

Moving on to the third set, the Phoenix would go up 7-4 early. That's when the Giants served up six unanswered points to flip the score in their favor, 10-7. Wilson, however, would go on a three-point run to even the match back up at 10. The two teams continued to battle until things were knotted up at 17, that's when the Phoenix started an eight-point run to close out the set 25-17 giving Wilson the 3-0 victory for the match. 

Inside the Box Score: Sophomore Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) led both teams with 13 kills, freshman Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) followed that up with 10 and sophomore Madison Coy (Indiana, PA., Penns Manor) was able to add four. Junior Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fla., Coral Springs) racked up 5 blocks in the match while freshman Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, PA., James Buchanan) tallied up 24 assists. All together Wilson had 32 kills on 78 attempts against 12 errors for a hitting percentage of .256 while their opponent finished with 25 kills on 87 attempts against 23 errors for a hitting percentage of .023. The Phoenix also finished with 12 aces and a total of four blocks. 

Up Next: The women's volleyball team will be back in action this Thursday, October 3, where they will host Notre Dame of Maryland University (11-2, 0-0 CSAC)  in another CSAC matchup. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
