Phoenix Drop to Gators in Conference Play

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team squared off against the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University this evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match. The Phoenix (8-7, 1-1 CSAC) were defeated by the Gators (13-2, 1-0 CSAC) in a tough fought battle at home. The final score of the match was three sets to nil with scores of 25-23, 27-25, and 25-14.

How It Happened: Both teams started the first set out back and forth until Notre Dame was able to jump on a 9-1 scoring run, pushing them in front 17-8. That's when Wilson started their own 14-5 run and tied the game up at 22 apiece. The Phoenix continued to battle but could not pull off the comeback and fell in the first set, 25-23. 

In the second set, the crowd came alive and started to breathe life into the team after they dropped the first four points in the set. With their newly found energy, Wilson jumped on a 12-2 run pushing them in front 12-6. The Gators would not go down easily as they were able to come back and flip the score to 17-13. Both opponents dueled and the Phoenix were able to close the gap to just one point but they could not close out the set. They would drop this one to a score of 27-25. 

In the final set, the back and forth continued as both teams would knot the score up at seven points apiece. That's when Notre Dame would start to pull away, eventually stretching their lead to 20-13. Wilson would fall in the final set by a final score of 25-14, giving the Gators the three sets to none victory.

Inside the Box Score: Freshman Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) led the Phoenix with 13 kills on the night, sophomore Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) finished with eight, and junior Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fla., Coral Springs) would finish the match with two kills and one block. Posiulai led the team with nine digs while Eigen-Zucchi finished up with eight. Freshman Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, PA., James Buchanan) dished out 22 assists for the match while Farnes, Posiulai, and sophomore Madison Coy (Indiana, PA., Penns Manor) each finished with three aces. All together the Phoenix finished with 25 kills on 72 attempts against 17 errors for a hitting percentage of .111 while Notre Dame finished with 40 kills on 102 attempts against 20 errors for a hitting percentage of .196. 

Up Next: The women's volleyball team will continue CSAC play as they get ready to travel to face the Lions of Bryn Athyn (3-9, 1-0 CSAC) on Saturday, October 5, at 1:00 p.m.
