Phoenix Blanked by Griffins

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team hit the road for a non-conference match-up with Gwynedd Mercy University. The Griffins (3-6-1) topped the Phoenix (2-7) by a final score of 2-0.

How It Happened: The first half was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to find offensive opportunities. The Griffins took a shot wide of the goal midway through the first half and didn't get another shot off until less than four minutes to go in the opening half. For the Phoenix, the first scoring opportunity came on a corner kick near the 23 minute mark of the first half, but they were unable to convert. Senior Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) put the only shot on goal for the visitors late in the half, but the Griffins keeper was able to get the save as the two teams went into halftime with a scoreless tie. In the second half, the host Griffins didn't wast much time in getting on the scoreboard as Gavin Greenley struck for his second goal of the season less than ten minutes into the action. With fourteen minutes left to play, Phoenix freshman Garrick Hill (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) took a shot on goal, but again the Griffins keeper recorded the save. The last opportunity for the visitors to score came near the eight minute mark when freshman Joe Pacheco (Jonesboro, ARK., The Academies at Jonesboro) launched a shot just wide of the goal. The Griffins tacked on a late goal to make the final score 2-0.

Inside the Box Score: Perry and Hill took the only shots on goal for the Phoenix. Senior Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) collected two saves in goal. 

Up Next: Wilson will return to action at home on Monday, September 30 at 4:00 p.m. versus Penn State Brandywine.
