Maroons Shutout Phoenix


SALEM, Va.- The Phoenix field hockey team took on the Roanoke College Maroons this evening in nonconference action. Roanoke (5-2) used an offensive attack to defeat the Phoenix (3-5) by a score of 4-0. 

How It Happened: Roanoke wasted no time jumping out to a lead, scoring less than two minutes into the game on a shot that came off of a rebound.

Four minutes later the Maroons struck again, taking a 2-0 in the first five minutes of play. Roanoke took 10 shots in the first period alone while the Phoenix had 3 shots, all off the stick of Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona).

Wilson was able to hold the Maroons scoreless in the second period but was unable to get on the board themselves, as they went into the half trailing 2-0. The Phoenix were outshot 13-4 in the first half with penalty corners being 6-2 in favor of the Maroons as well. 

The Maroons continued to send shots toward the Phoenix cage in the third period, taking 10 shots in the quarter before connecting for their third goal with 11 seconds left. Roanoke went on to add one more goal in the fourth quarter to finish off a 4-0 victory. 

Inside the Box Score: Shots were 27-6 in favor of the Maroons who put 13 shots on goal. The Phoenix were awarded just 4 penalty corners while the Maroons took 16. Singer led the Phoenix with four shots and goalie Krista Nayadley (Hampton, Va., Hampton) finished with nine saves. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will host St. Mary's College of Maryland this Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
