ROANOKE, Va. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team traveled to the campus of Hollins University where the Phoenix (6-5, 0-0) took part in a tri-match against the Tigers of Trinity Washington University and Hollins University(8-7, 0-3). Wilson took the first match, against Trinity, three sets to none but lost to Hollins, in the second, three sets to none.
Game 1: In the first match against the Tigers, the Phoenix won three sets to nil with scores of 25-8, 25-12, and 25-4. Sophomore
Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) led the team with eight kills while sophomore
Tia Jones (Springfield, VA., Lake Braddock) added seven more and junior
Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fla., Coral Springs) finished with six.
Wilson served the ball masterfully all match as the team finished with 22 aces.
Jones led the team with six while freshmen
Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, PA., James Buchanan) and
Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) both notched five.
Mongold also finished with 21 assists.
For the first match, the Phoenix finished with 26 kills on 44 attempts against seven errors for a hitting percentage of .432 while holding their opponents to six kills on 46 attempts against 15 errors for a hitting percentage of -.196. Wilson also racked up 24 digs, 23 assists, and 22 aces.
Game 2: In the second match of the afternoon, Wilson was defeated by Hollins three sets to nil with scores of 25-15, 26-24, 25-17.
Jones led the team with 9 kills while
Posiulai and
Eigen-Zucchi followed up with eight and six kills, respectively. Sophomore
Madison Coy (Indiana, PA., Penns Manor) led both teams with five aces while
Mongold led both teams with 26 assists,
Eigen-Zucchi led the team with 13 digs.
The Phoenix finished with 29 kills on 115 attempts against 18 errors for a hitting percentage of .096 while Hollins finished with 36 kills on 97 attempts against eight errors for a hitting percentage of .289. Wilson led both teams with 11 aces and was able to finish with four blocks, 27 assists, and 50 digs.
Up Next: The women's volleyball team will be back in action this Wednesday, September 25, where they will take on St. Mary's College of Maryland (4-9, 0-0) at 7:00 P.M.
