Phoenix Top Nittany Lions


SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- Freshman Anika Eigen-Zucchi's (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) 18 kills powered the Phoenix to a close four-set victory over the Nittany Lions of Penn State Mont Alto last evening.

Wilson (5-5) took the first two sets by scores of 28-26 and 25-19 before Mont Alto responded by winning the third set 25-22. The Phoenix bounced back in the fourth set by winning 25-20 to win the match, 3-1. 

How It Happened: In the first set the Phoenix struck for 12 kills on 41 attempts while Mont Alto had 7 kills on 34 attempts. The set took a few extra points to decide a winner, but the Phoenix prevailed 28-26.

In the second set, the Phoenix had 9 kills on 23 attempts and just 1 error as they won the set 25 19 to go-ahead 2-0. The Nittany Lions had 13 kills in their third set victory on 32 attempts, while the Phoenix had 11 kills on 37 attempts.

Wilson capped off an impressive night with a 25-20 fourth set victory, collecting 13 kills on 37 attempts with just 3 errors.

Inside the Box Score: As a team, the Phoenix tallied 45 kills on 138 attempts to go along with 7 services aces and 7 blocks. Anika Eigen-Zucchi led the team with 18 kills while Tia Jones (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) added 12 and Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii., University Laboratory School) another 11. Eigen-Zucchi also had 5 blocks and 14 digs in the match while Freshman Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, Pa., James Buchanan) registered 27 assists. Elizabeth Vuxta (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown) also added 13 assists for the Phoenix to go along with her 10 digs. Jones had a team-high 18 digs to contribute to the 61 total digs for the Phoenix. 

Up Next: The Phoenix are back-in-action on Saturday at Hollins University for a tri-match against Trinity (D.C.) and Hollins. Matches are at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
