BRIDGEWATER, Va.- The Wilson women's volleyball team traveled to Bridgewater College this afternoon for the first session of matches in the Route 42 Classic.

Wilson took on Bridgewater in the first match, falling to the Eagles in three sets, before dropping the second match against Salem College that also saw the Phoenix fall in three sets.

Match One: The Eagles got off to a hot start in the first set of the match, jumping out to an early 10-3 lead over Wilson. The hosts would later extend the score to 18-6 before a Phoenix timeout. Bridgewater was able to close out the first set with a strong finish going on to win 25-11. The Phoenix registered 5 kills on 16 attempts in set one.

The second set saw some back-and-forth- play early on before the Eagles rattled off six straight points to hold a 17-8 lead over the Phoenix. After back-to-back Wilson points, Bridgewater scored another six points in a row to move the score to 23-10, they would go on to win the second set 25-11. The Phoenix totaled 30 attempts in the set but managed only 7 kills.

The Phoenix finally got things going in the third set after consecutive kills from Tia Jones (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) gave them an early 6-5 lead. Three straight Eagle errors, later on, gave Wilson a 10-6 advantage. The Eagles responded by bringing the score to 11-9 before scoring 5 consecutive points to take a 14-11 lead. Both teams went on to trade points but with Bridgewater ahead 21-17, the Eagles scored 4 points in a row to win 25-17. Three of the final four points for the Eagles came off of Phoenix errors.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix finished the first match with 16 kills on 82 attempts while also having 19 errors. Tia Jones had 6 kills to go along with 9 digs while Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fla., Coral Springs) and Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii., University Laboratory School) each had 5 kills. Freshman Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, Pa., James Buchanan) had 15 assists and 7 digs.

Match Two: The Phoenix found themselves trailing early in the second match of the night as the Salem College Spirits took an early 13-4 lead. Later trailing 16-7, the Phoenix grabbed a bit of momentum with kills from Tia Jones and Tioleaoauli Posiulai to get back within six. The Spirits stopped the Phoenix momentum by going back up by 9 and later going on to win the first set 25-15.

In the second set, the Phoenix jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead before the Spirits responded in a big way with 7 straight points to go ahead 10-7. The two teams went on to trade points as the Phoenix trailed 17-16 later in the set. Salem was able to gain some breathing room from Wilson as they closed out the second set on top 25-19.

Once again the Phoenix had a lead early on, holding a 7-5 lead over the Spirits after Elizabeth Vuxta (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown) was able to register a service ace, however, Wilson couldn't hold onto their advantage, allowing the Spirits to score another seven straight to move ahead 12-7. Wilson was unable to recover from the Salem run and dropped the final set 25-18.
