Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Victorious Over Vixens

SWEET BRIAR, Va.- The Wilson College field hockey team took on the Vixens of Sweet Briar College this afternoon in their first game of the new season. The Phoenix, who are coming off of a 10-7 2018 season, started the 2019 campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Vixens.

How It Happened: It only took Wilson three minutes to score their first goal of the year as Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, Pa., Midd-West) scooped up a rebound off a shot and sent a shot of her own past the goalie to put the Phoenix up early. Wilson closed out the first quarter with six shots, three of which came off the stick of Sheaffer.

The Phoenix took their momentum into the second quarter as they continued to keep play inside the offensive zone and put shots on net. A minute and a half into the quarter Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) found the back of the net to give Wilson a quick 2-0 advantage.

The Phoenix would register two other shots in the period, including a shot from Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot) that struck the post. Wilson went into the half ahead 2-0, outshooting the Vixens 11-1.

The Phoenix continued their offensive dominance in the third period but were unable to score despite sending six shots toward the Sweet Briar goalie. Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) tallied three shots of her own in the quarter while Allison Reber added another two.

Wilson went on to strike one more time in the final quarter of play as freshman Chelsey Duncan (Crisfield, Md., Crisfield Academy) connected for her first goal as a Phoenix. Allison Reber, who had a solid night overall, assisted on the goal to give her two for the game.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson heavily outshot the Vixens 25-1, with 18 shots on target and 8 shots alone coming in the fourth quarter. The Phoenix took 14 penalty corners throughout the contest to Sweet Briar's three. Allison Reber finished the game with a team-high 6 shots and racked up 2 assists. Breeann Sheaffer, Jenna Carty and Chelsey Duncan were the goal scorers for Wilson while Michaela Singer and Alexis Alleman (Shippensburg, Pa., Shippensburg) combined for 9 shots on the night.

Up Next: The Phoenix will have a week off of games before traveling to Earlham College in Richmond, Ind. next Saturday, September 7.
