Softball Crowned CSAC Champs

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson
College softball team resumed play in the 2019 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) softball championship. The Phoenix (27-6-2) played two games against the Falcons of Cedar Crest College (19-24) and beat them both times by scores of 5-4 and 9-4. Wilson completed the sweep of the championship and was crowned as the new 2019 CSAC softball champions!

Game 1: Game one started yesterday a little after 5:00 p.m. and featured Phoenix ace junior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) on the mound. With a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Falcons struck first and added three runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. With the rain starting to come down, the game was postponed going into the fourth inning and play picked up earlier this morning at 10:00 a.m.

Both teams would leave the fourth inning with the score still in the Falcons favor at 3-0. Cedar Crest would add one more run in the top of the fifth, bringing the score to 4-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Wilson would get the bats going and put some runs on the scoreboard. Freshman Chloe Perrin (Milton, Pa., Milton) got the scoring started as she smacked an RBI single up th middle and brought the score to 4-1. Later on in the inning, freshman Baille Jones (Shippensburg, Pa., Shippensburg) would score two more runs on an RBI double to right center field, narrowing the Cedar Crest lead to just one run at 4-3. Junior Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) would tie the game up at four with an RBI single to left center field.

Regulation wasn't enough for these two teams as they were all knotted up at four apiece after seven innings. Potter  would retire the top of the eighth inning in order as her and her teammates carried their momentum into the bottom of the inning. That's when sophomore Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) drove in the game-winning run on a walk-off single down the right-field line. The Phoenix would win this game 5-4.

Inside the Box Score: Potter cruised to her 19th win of the season as struck out ten batters during her complete game victory. Perrin finish the game going 1-4 with an RBI, Carty wrapped up her game going 1-2 with an RBI and two walks, and Jones went 2-2 with two RBIs. Wilson finished with five runs on 10 hits and one error while their opponent finished with four runs on ten hits and one error.

Game 2: Game two was set to be the championship game with Cedar Crest and Wilson facing off for the second time in the afternoon. The Falcons would start the game with vengeance as they were able to put up two runs on three hits and four errors in the top of the first. Things would settle down and remain quiet until the bottom of the third when Shockey was able to knock an RBI single down the left field line, bringing the score to 2-1 still in favor of Cedar Crest.

Picking up play in the bottom of the fifth, with the score still 2-1, the Blue and White would start their comeback rally. Shockey got things started again, driving in a run on an RBI double. A few batters later, freshman Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) drove in another run on an RBI single to center. The scoring wouldn't stop there for the Phoenix,  junior Jennifer Cail (Lisle, IL, Lisle) added another run on the scoreboard by singling to right field. After a Falcon pitching change, Wilson picked right back up and continued to score and after the inning was all over Wilson was able to score seven runs on six hits and no errors, pushing them back in front by a score of 8-2.

The Phoenix defense would stay strong as they were able to keep the Cedar Crest offense at bay and walk away with a 9-4 come from behind victory. With this victory, Wilson was crowned your 2019 CSAC softball champions, their first conference victory in their first year in the CSAC.
