CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team hosted a doubleheader against the Knights of Southern Virginia University earlier this afternoon in a nonconference matchup. The Phoenix (13-5-2, 4-0 CSAC) split the series with the Knights (7-23) with the first game going to Wilson, 2-1, and the second game going to Southern Virginia, 13-2.
Game 1: Junior
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) got the starting nod for the Phoenix in game one, she would have a no-hitter going into the top of the fourth inning. That's when the Knights were able to score a run, pushing the score in their favor 1-0. Moving ahead to the bottom of the sixth inning, Wilson would go on to score 2 runs off one hit and one error. Freshman
Kaylee Quillen (Glenville, Pa., South Western) got things started by reaching base on a walk; next batter, junior
Jennifer Cail (Lisle, IL, Lisle), would reach base after being hit by a pitch. This set up freshman pinch-hitter
Gabriella Newman (Hanover, Pa., South Western), who singled to right field and drove in both runners.The Phoenix would go on to win game one by a final score of 2-1.
Inside the Box Score: Newman would help spark the Wilson offense, she would finish game one going 1-1 with 2 RBIs. Sophomore
Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) would also help out in a big way, she went 2-3 in game one.
Potter was virtually unhittable throughout the game, she went on to earn her eighth win of the season. The Phoenix would go on to score two runs on four hits and one error while the Knights finished game one scoring one run on three hits and one error.
Game 2: In the second game, of the doubleheader, sophomore
Daphne Buzard (Kane, PA., Cocalico) started on the mound for the Phoenix. Southern Virginia would strike early in this game, they would score a run in the top half of the first inning. In the bottom half, Wilson would respond right away. Sophomore
Amber Rexrode (Annville, PA., Annville Cleona) would get things started with a single to center field. A few batters later, freshman
Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) would drive her home with a single to center field, evening the game up at 1-1. In the top of the second, The Knights would score three runs on three hits and one error. They would go on to take the second game from the Phoenix by a score of 13-2, in five innings.
Inside the Box Score: Rexrode finished the game going 1-1 with a run and two walks,
Durant would finish going 1-3 with one RBI. Wilson would wrap-up game two by scoring two runs on three hits and four errors while Southern Virginia would score 13 runs on 11 hits and two errors.
Up Next: The Phoenix will hit the road this Friday, April 12, where they will face Rosemont College(8-18, 1-3 CSAC) in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader, starting at 3:00 p.m.
