Softball Sweeps Ravens

ROSEMONT, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team was back in action on Friday with a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader at Rosemont College. The Phoenix (15-5-2, 6-0 CSAC) swept the host Ravens (8-20, 1-5 CSAC) by scores of 6-5 (8 innings) and 12-4. Junior Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) paced the Phoenix offense with a 3-for-7 effort at the plate with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI.

How It Happened: In the opener the Phoenix trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the third inning when freshman Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) stepped to the plate and smashed her first collegiate homerun, a solo shot to left field, to tie the game at 1-1. Heading to the top of the fifth inning, the Phoenix again found themselves down a run. Shockey led off the inning with a double, Durant followed with a walk and junior Jennifer Cail (Lisle, IL, Lisle) singled to load the bases. Freshman Emma Carbaugh (Chambersburg, Pa. , Chambersburg) drilled a double to left filed scoring Shockey and Durant to put the visitors up 3-2. Sophomore Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) and freshman Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, Pa., Donegal) followed with RBI's of their own pushing the lead to 5-2. The Phoenix held that lead until the bottom of the seventh when the Ravens would stage a rally with 1 out. A pair of singles and a Phoenix miscue made the score 5-3. After junior pitcher Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) recorded her second strikeout of the inning, another Phoenix error allowed two more runs to score and the game was tied 5-5. The teams went to the international tiebreaker rule in the top of the eighth inning. Sophomore Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) was able to bring in Bradley with an infield ground out in what proved to be the winning run as the Phoenix closed out the Ravens 6-5.

After a brief rain delay, the Phoenix had little trouble with the Ravens in game 2. After a scoreless first inning, the Phoenix offense got going in the second as Carbaugh singled to bring home Cail. Kosheba, Roth, and Shockey each recorded an RBI as the visitors increased the lead to 4-0. The Phoenix would tack on another 4 runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) got things going with her second homerun of the season. Later in the inning, freshman Baille Jones (Shippensburg, Pa., Shippensburg) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Kosheba. Shockey followed with an RBI single and Cail closed out the scoring in the inning with an RBI double to center field. Four more runs came across for the Phoenix in the fifth inning. Shockey started things off with a 2-RBI single and later on, Jones scored on a wild pitch and Shockey followed her in on a passed ball to make the score 12-0. The Ravens tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning. A Phoenix error followed by a pair of singles and a bases loaded walk got the home team on the board. A bases clearing double followed to make the score 12-4, but the Phoenix closed the door without allowing another run for the mercy rule victory.

Inside the Box Score: Shockey led the offense with 3 hits and 4 RBI. Cail also had 3 hits and an RBI as well as 2 runs scored. Kosheba was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI. In the circle, Potter collected the win in game 1 allowing 5 runs (3 earned) while striking out 7 in 8 innings of work. Sophomore Daphne Buzard (Kane, PA., Cocalico) got the win in game 2 allowing 4 runs (0 earned) while striking out 6 in 4.1 innings of work.
