Phoenix Cruise Past Crusaders


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix softball team was back in action today against the visiting Crusaders of Christendom College. Wilson (12-4-2, 4-0 CSAC) picked up two victories today against the Crusaders (10-6, 4-1), with scores of 10-5 in game one and 12-4 in game two. The Phoenix recorded a total of 29 hits on the day, putting up 15 in game one and 14 in game two. 

Game One: The Crusaders got off to a solid start in the first inning, plating three runs on three hits off of Phoenix pitcher Gabriella Newman (Hanover, Pa., South Western). After Wilson was unable to get anything going offensively in the bottom half of the inning, Christendom added a fourth run on an RBI groundout to take an early 4-0 lead over the Phoenix.

The Phoenix offense got going in the bottom of the second after Baille Jones (Shippensburg, Pa., Shippensburg) started the inning with a single to right field. Meghan Bradley (Warrington, Pa., Central Bucks South) reached on a fielders choice two batters later and was knocked in on an RBI double by Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, Pa., Donegal). A batter later, Katey Roth (Lebanon, Pa., Lebanon) stepped in and poked a single to right field to score Kosheba and cut their deficit in half.

After Newman shutdown the Crusader offense in the top of the third, the Phoenix helped her out with a big bottom half of the inning. After Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) and Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) singled to start things off, Jennifer Cail (Lisle, Ill., Lisle) ripped a double to center field to score Shockey. Claudia Umbrell (Willow Hill, Pa., Fannett Metal ) then reached on an error that allowed Durant to score from third and tie the game at four. Meghan Bradley then knocked in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. Two batters later Katey Roth hit another single to center that scored a run to put the Phoenix up 6-4.

The Crusaders got back within striking distance in the top of the fourth as they knocked in a run on a single to center. Wilson added a run later on in the bottom of the fifth as Katey Roth struck again, hitting another single to center to put her team up 7-5. Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown), who took over on the mound back in the fourth inning, struck out the side in the top of the sixth as the the Phoenix offense tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Alison Shockey doubled to start the inning and then scored on a Taylor Durant double. Later in the inning Emma Carbaugh (Chambersburg, Pa. , Chambersburg) hit a sac fly that brought home Durant, and then three batters later Jessica Kosheba reached on an error that allowed Kaylee Quillen (Glenville, Pa., South Western) to score to make it 10-5.

Potter went back to work in the seventh, striking out two of the three hitters to secure a 10-5 victory for the Phoenix. 

Inside the Box Score: Katey Roth finished the game going 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs while Alison Shockey also had 3 hits in 4 plate appearances. Taylor Durant, Jennifer Cail and Kaylee Quillen each had 2 hits, with Durant and Cail picking up RBIs. Gabriella Newman picked up the win for the Phoenix to improve to 3-0 on the season. 

Game Two: After neither team got anything going in the first inning, the Phoenix got on the board first with a six-run second inning. Taylor Durant and Jennifer Cail started the inning with singles and then Kaylee Quillen loaded the bases, reaching on an infield single. Megan Bradley then knocked in Cail and Durant with a single as Katey Roth then plated two more runs with a single to center to put the Phoenix up 4-0.

Amber Rexrode kept the rally going with an RBI single that was followed by an Alison Shockey double to put the Phoenix up 6-0. Wilson went on to add another run in the bottom of the third to go up 7-0, as starting pitcher Daphne Buzard (Kane, PA., Cocalico) continued to hold the Crusaders offense in check.

Christendom was able to strike in the top of the fifth on a grand slam to center field to cut the score to 7-4, but the Phoenix added two big insurance runs in the next inning to go back up 9-4. Amber Rexrode hit a sac fly to score the first run and Taylor Durant later walked to score Jessica Kosheba, who reached earlier on a bunt single. Wilson went on to add three runs in the bottom of the sixth to reach the 8-run rule mark and take home a 12-4 win. 

Inside the Box Score: Katey Roth had her second 3 for 5, 3 RBI game of the day while Amber Rexrode finished the game 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Meghan Bradley also had 3 RBIs on the day to go along with her two runs scored. Daphne Buzard got the win on the mound for the Phoenix, throwing 6 innings and striking out 5 to improve to 2-1 on the year. 

Up Next:
Wilson will take on Southern Virginia (6-22, 0-4 CAC) this Tuesday, in a make-up doubleheader from Friday.
