CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix softball team took on the Defenders of Clarks Summit University today in a CSAC doubleheader. Wilson (10-4-2, 4-0 CSAC) took down the Defenders (5-15, 0-4 CSAC) in both games, winning game one 4-0 and game two 7-6.
Game 1: After Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) walked to lead off the game, she stole second and was able to advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by Amber Rexrode (Annville, Pa., Annville Cleona). Later in the inning Taylor Durant doubled to right field, scoring both Roth and Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) who reached on an error earlier. After one inning of play, the Phoenix led 2-0.
Wilson added another run in the bottom half of the second to make the score 3-0 early on. Jennifer Cail (Lisle, Ill., Lisle) started the inning with a double to right and later advanced to third on a passed ball with two outs. Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, Pa., Donegal) was able to reach first on an error by the shortstop which allowed Cail to score from third.
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) was on the mound for the Phoenix getting through innings three, four and five allowing just one hit and striking out seven. In the bottom of the fifth the Phoenix added some insurance after Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) reached on an error that allowed Roth to score from second. Potter was able to shut down the Defenders offense for the final two innings and help the Phoenix grab a 4-0 victory.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix totaled six hits in the first game with Jennifer Cail leading the way with two. The Wilson 3, 4, 5 hitters each had a hit, with Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) picking up 2 RBIs for the Phoenix. Megan Potter was almost untouchable in the game, pitching 7 strong innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 14 to put her record at 5-3.
Game 2: The Phoenix came out of the gates hot in game two, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick lead over the Defenders. Roth got things started by reaching on an error by the second baseman. After stealing second,
Roth scored on an RBI double by
Rexrode. Later in the inning,
Rexrode scored from third on a
Taylor Durant groundout as the Phoenix led 2-0.
Carty kept the rally going by reaching first on a drop third strike and then advancing to second and third on passed balls.
Jennifer Cail knocked in
Carty from third with an RBI single to give Wilson the 3-0 advantage.
Megan Potter was back on the mound for the Phoenix in game two, getting through the second and third innings without any damage. Wilson then tacked on one more run in the bottom of the third as
Jennifer Cail launched a double to left that scored
Carty who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. After Potter struck out 2 of the 3 Defender hitters in the top of the fourth, the Phoenix stretched their lead to 5-0 on a
Rexrode RBI single that plated
Roth.
The Defenders finally figured out
Megan Potter in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to cut their deficit to 5-3, but the Phoenix answered with another run in the bottom half of the inning after
Meghan Bradley (Warrington, Pa., Central Bucks South) reached on an error that allowed
Baille Jones (Shippensburg, Pa., Shippensburg) to score. The visitors wouldn't go away easily, however, striking for two more runs in the top of the sixth on a two-RBI single to center. Up just 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Wilson was looking to add some insurance runs and would do so in the inning.
Alison Shockey stroked a one-out single up the middle and
Taylor Durant followed that up with a single of her own. Two batters later
Jennifer Cail reached on an error that Shockey scored on to put the Phoenix up 7-5. Despite allowing one run in the top of the seventh, Potter was able to buckle down and get the final out for the Phoenix to secure a 7-5 win.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix scored 7 runs on 6 hits, leaving 10 runners on base in game two.
Amber Rexrode and
Jennifer Cail had two hits and two RBIs apiece while
Taylor Durant finished 1 for 2 with an RBI of her own.
Megan Potter picked up another win improving to 6-3 on the year after throwing another 7 innings, striking out 9 in the game.
Up Next: The Phoenix have a quick turnaround with two games tomorrow against Christendom College (10-4, 4-1) beginning at 1:00 p.m.
