CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College softball team squared off against the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin College in a nonconference doubleheader, earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (8-4-2, 2-0 CSAC) split the doubleheader with the Fighting Squirrels (5-21, 1-9 USAS) winning the first game 13-1 (5 innings) but losing the second game 10-1 (5 innings)
Game 1: Junior
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) got the start in game one as she helped Wilson get off to a hot start by retiring the top of the first inning in order. Picking up play in the bottom of the second, freshman
Gabriella Newman (Hanover, Pa., South Western) singled to center field that drove in a run, making the score 1-0 Phoenix. Later on, in the bottom of the third inning, the Wilson offense would come alive as they were able to record six runs on five hits and one error. After freshman
Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, Pa., Donegal) tripled to start off the inning, sophomore
Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) was able to draw a walk as
Kosheba was able to score off a wild pitch, making the score 2-0. A few batters later, junior
Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) homered to deep center field, driving in 3 runs and bringing the score to 5-0 in favor of the Phoenix.
Newman would later reach base on an error as she was able to drive in a run and then
Kosheba was able to double to right and drive in the final run of the inning, bringing the score to 7-0. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Blue and White were able to knock a couple of insurance runs as they were able to score six runs off of seven hits and one error. Wilson would go on to win the first game by a final score of 13-1 in five innings.
Inside the Box Score: Potter was dominating in this game as she had a no-hitter going until the top of the fifth inning where the Fighting Squirrels scored a run off of two hits. Sophomore
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) and
Kosheba led the Phoenix as they were both able to go 3-3 in the game.
Shockey came up in a big way as she finished the first game going 2-4, with a home run, while
Newman finished going 2-3 with one RBI. Wilson finished the game scoring 13 runs off of 16 hits while holding their opponent to one run off two hits, all of which came in the final inning.
Game 2: Mary Baldwin got their offense going early in this one, they would jump out to an early 6-0 lead after the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, the Phoenix would try and chip away at the lead as junior
Jennifer Cail (Lisle, IL, Lisle) was able to drive in a run off a single to left field, making the score 6-1 in favor of the Fighting Squirrels. Later on, in the second inning, Mary Baldwin would strike again as they were able to drive in two more runs, furthering their lead to 8-1. In the fourth inning, they would add two more runs as Alexis Clark was able to hit a homer to center field, bringing the score to 10-1 in favor of the Fighting Squirrels. Wilson would lose the second game 10-1 in five innings.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix were able to score one run off five hits while Mary Baldwin finished with 10 runs off eight hits.
Shockey continued her seven-game hitting-streak, going 2-3 in the game.
Cail, sophomore
Amber Rexrode (Annville, PA., Annville Cleona), and freshman
Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) each finished with one hit apiece.
