BALTIMORE, Md.- The Wilson College softball team looked to continue their winning ways inside of conference play, taking on the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland in a CSAC doubleheader. The Phoenix (18-6-2, 8-0 CSAC) took care of the Gators (7-11, 1-7 CSAC) in both outings, with scores of 8-0 in game one and 15-1 in game two.
Game One: Wilson started off game one just as they hoped to, putting up seven runs in the first inning.
Katey Roth (Lebanon, Pa., Lebanon) started the game with a walk and quickly made her way around the bases on a steal and a wild pitch. She was then able to steal home on the fourth ball thrown to
Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, Pa., Donegal) to give the Phoenix the early 1-0 lead. Two batters later,
Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) reached on an error that allowed Kosheba to score and put the Phoenix up 2-0.
Later in the inning,
Daphne Buzard (Kane, Pa., Cocalico) drew a bases loaded RBI walk and then
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) was hit by a pitch that scored a run as Wilson led 4-0.
The big inning allowed the Phoenix to cycle through the lineup as
Katey Roth stepped in for the second time in the inning. She drove a ball down the right field line that scored all three Phoenix baserunners as she reached third with a triple. At the end of the inning, Wilson led 7-0.
Junior
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) was dominate on the mound once again for the Phoenix, as she continuously shutdown the Notre Dame hitters inning after inning to help sustain the 7-0 lead.
Despite having the big first inning, Wilson did not strike again up until the top of the fourth.
Jessica Kosheba singled to start the inning and reached third later on a passed ball. She then scored on a passed ball to put the Phoenix up 8-0. In the bottom of the fifth, after allowing a lead off walk, Potter shut the Gator hitters down to give Wilson the 8-0 game one victory.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had just four hits in game one but drew eight walks in the contest.
Katey Roth finished 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs to pace the Phoenix attack.
Megan Potter threw five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out ten.
Game Two: After a scoreless first inning, the Phoenix were able to strike first in game two in the top of the second inning. After the first three batters reached base for the Phoenix,
Jenna Carty drew a bases loaded walk that allowed a run to score and put Wilson up 1-0. Wilson then grounded into a double play to leave the bases loaded and end the inning.
In the top of the third the Phoenix took a commanding 10-0 in the game. They scored 9 runs on 4 hits and 4 Notre Dame errors.
Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) picked up three RBIs in the inning on a triple while
Jennifer Cail (Lisle, IL, Lisle),
Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) and
Daphne Buzard also had RBIs.
Wilson went on to add another five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 15-1 lead. The Phoenix had 3 hits in the inning including a homer from
Jennifer Cail to start the inning.
Megan Potter was on the mound again for game two and was able to pick up the final six outs of the game to give Wilson a 15-1 win.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix collected 10 hits in the game, including 3 from
Meghan Bradley and 2 more from
Alison Shockey, who had 3 RBIs.
Jennifer Cail also had two hits in the game along with 2 RBIs and a home run.
Megan Potter threw another five innings, giving up five hits and striking out six to improve to 12-3 on the year.
Up Next: Wilson will host Cedar Crest College (14-19, 6-2 CSAC) on Wednesday in a make-up game from last Saturday.
