Phoenix Drop a Pair of Matches on the Road

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team was in action today as they hit the road for a tri-match against the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College and the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union. The Phoenix (4-7, 1-2 NEAC) lost to the Blue Jays (7-14, 1-4 CVC) three sets to nil, with scores of  25-14, 25-23, 27-25, and to the Purple Raiders three sets to nil, with scores of  25-20, 25-23, 25-15.

How It Happened: In the first match, against Elizabethtown, the Phoenix came out to a 4-2 lead in the first set but their opponent would start a 17-4 run that put them in control. The Blue Jays would take the first set, 25-14. In the second set, Wilson would tie things up and jump out to a 5-4 lead. Elizabethtown would respond and start on another run that put them back on top, 11-5. Late in the set, the Phoenix would start to gain some momentum but could not capitalize as they would go on to lose the second set by a score of 25-23. Wilson settled down in the third set and started to compose a nice lead early on. Later in the set, with the score knotted up at 8, the Phoenix started a 3-0 run that put them ahead 11-8; kills came from seniors Allen Bull (New Freedom, Pa., Susquehannock) and Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford). After trading rallies, the Blue Jays were able to even things back up at 13. The two opponents went back and forth for the rest of the set until Elizabethtown would go on a 3-0 run that gave them the victory over Wilson, 27-25. The Blue Jays would take the match three sets to none.

In the second match, the Phoenix sought to turn things around against the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union. The game was close early on with both teams fighting to gain the lead. After Wilson was able to jump on top, 12-11, Mount Union would go on a 9-2 run that put them in the lead, 20-14. The Purple Raiders would take the first set, 25-20. In the second set, Wilson jumped out to a 12-5 lead. After a Mount Union timeout, they would start to chip away at the Phoenix lead and eventually even things up at 18. Soon after, the opponents would trade rallies before the Raiders would go on to win, 25-23. In the final set, both teams were tied at 4 apiece. Mount Union would go on an 11-2 run that brought the score in their favor, 15-6. The Phoenix would go on to lose the final set, 25-15, and the match, three sets to none. 

Inside the Box Score: Junior Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) finished the first match with 13 assists and the second with 17 for a total of 30 assists for the day. Senior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) had a total of 30 kills for the day, while McMaster finished with 14, and junior Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) finished with 12. Senior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) would round off his day with 17 digs, 10 of which came in the first match., while Bull had one ace in each match. The Phoenix finished the first match with a hitting percentage of .122 while they finished their second match with a hitting percentage of .106. 

Up Next: Wilson will hit the road where they will take on Keuka College (9-6, 1-2 NEAC) in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on Saturday, March 16, at 1:00 p.m.
