Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Falcons Soar Over Phoenix

GRANTHAM, Pa.- The Wilson College men's volleyball team was in action tonight, for the second time this week, as they hit the road to take on the Falcons of Messiah College. The Phoenix (4-5, 1-2 NEAC) were defeated by the Falcons (10-6, 5-2 MAC) 3 sets to nil with scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 37-35.

How It Happened: The two opponents started off the match by trading points back and forth. Senior Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) was able to get a kill, off a junior Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) assist, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of Messiah. The Falcons would then jump out to a 7-2 run that tipped the score further in their favor, 12-6. The Phoenix started to gain some momentum towards the end of the first set, but it proved to be too late as Messiah would go on to win the first, 25-18.

The Falcons started the second set on a 5-1 run. As the set continued, the Phoenix responded in a big way and started a 4-0 run that brought the score within one point, 9-8. Messiah responded by going on a 5-2 run that placed them back in front and brought the score to 14-10. Wilson then started to battle back and was able to bring the score within two, 20-18, with kills coming from McMaster, senior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy), and junior Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary). The Falcons went on to a 5-0 run to close out and take the second set by a final score of 25-18.

Both teams came out fighting and Wilson was able to gain a slight edge early in the third set only to have Messiah tie things up at seven. This trend continued throughout the set; as the Phoenix were able to gain a slight lead, the Falcons would storm back and even the score up. With neither team able to gain the advantage, Wilson and Messiah squared off for a several series of all out, back and forth rallies.  After the well fought rallies, the Falcons were able to squeak by and take the final set, 37-35.

Inside the Box Score: Aaron Hoke led the Phoenix with 20 kills, McMaster had 13 while junior Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) had five. Senior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) led both teams with 16 digs while Firestone led both teams with 37 assists. Wilson finished with 41 kills against 19 errors on 111 attempts for a hitting percentage of .198 while Messiah finished with 49 kills against 15 errors on 102 attempts for a hitting percentage of .333.

Up Next: Wilson will travel to Elizabethtown College on Saturday, March 9, where they will take on the Blue Jays  (5-14, 1-4 CVC) at 11:00 a.m.
