Phoenix Rumble Past Thunder

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix men's volleyball team captured a victory against the visiting Thunder of Trine University tonight in a non-conference match. Wilson (4-4, 1-2 NEAC) defeated the Thunder (4-15, 0-2 MCVL) in an exciting five set match with scores of 25-17 Wilson, 25-21 Trine, 25-18 Trine, 25-22 Wilson and 15-13 Wilson.  

How It Happened: The Phoenix took control of the first set early, jumping out to a 12-6 lead over the Thunder. Wilson was able to extend their lead out to 20-10 later in the set. Despite trailing, Trine showed some fight by trading points with the Phoenix, but the hosts ultimately came away with a 25-17 set one victory. The Phoenix had 10 kills in the set on 30 attacks and hit for just one error. 

Trine was able to bounce back in the second set, taking an early 9-5 lead. The Phoenix climbed right back into the set however, tying the game at 11. The Phoenix later took a 17-15 lead but the Thunder regained the advantage by scoring the next 10 of 14 points to win the set 25-21.

The Thunder once again led early in the third set, taking a 9-5 lead over the Phoenix. Both teams preceded to trade points before Trine took a commanding 19-13 lead that forced a Wilson timeout. The Phoenix were unable to recover and the Thunder rolled to a 25-18 win and took a 2-1 lead in the match. 

The Phoenix showed no quit with their backs against the wall heading into the fourth set. The set was back-and-forth the whole way and with the score tied 20-20 late, the Phoenix rattled off three consecutive points to take a 23-20 lead. Wilson held off the Thunder and staved off a loss by winning the set 25-22. The Phoenix struck for 16 kills on 39 attempts during the fourth set. 

Wilson went into the fifth set with tons of momentum, and they would use that to their advantage. The Phoenix, playing with a lot of intensity, exploded out to an 8-2 lead before extending the score to 11-5. The Thunder weren't ready to quit however, as they fought back to bring the score to 14-13. Trine carried the momentum into the final few points, but committed a service error on the final point to give the Phoenix a 15-13 victory. 

Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished the match with 51 kills on 150 attempts and 29 errors. Senior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) led both teams with 27 kills while Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) added 17. Aaron Hoke also tallied 13 digs and 2 service aces in the match. Junior Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) was able to collect 48 assists, while senior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) had a strong game defensively finishing with 25 digs. 

Up Next: The Phoenix are back in action tomorrow night on the road against Messiah College (9-6, 5-2 MAC) at 7:00 p.m.
