Phoenix Blank Trinity Twice

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team took on Trinity University (D.C.) in non-conference action this afternoon. The Phoenix (7-3-2) no-hit the Tigers (0-8) in both games of the double-header taking game 1 by a score of 23-0 and winning game 2 by a score of 21-0. 

GAME 1: The Phoenix ran away with the game from the opening frame as the team crossed home plate 9 times. Freshman Chloe Perrin (Milton, Pa., Milton) doubled to left center to score sophomore Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon). Freshman Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) followed with a triple that scored Perrin and sophomore Amber Rexrode (Annville, PA., Annville Cleona) for a 3-0 lead. Junior Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) singled to bring home Durant and later in the inning sophomore Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) singled to score classmate Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim). Roth got her first hit of the game with an RBI double to left that scored Bradley for a 7-0 advantage. Perrin would finish off the scoring for the Phoenix in the inning with her second double that brought home Rexrode as the Phoenix pushed the lead to 9-0 after one. Four runs came across for the home team in the second inning with the big blow being an RBI double by Bradley that scored Shockey and Carty as the Phoenix led 13-0 after two. After a quiet third inning for the Tigers, the Phoenix would add four more runs in their half of the frame. Freshman Gabriella Newman (Hanover, Pa., South Western) singled to center to score classmate Emma Carbaugh (Chambersburg, Pa. , Chambersburg). A pair of bases loaded walks and an error led to three more runs as the lead moved to 17-0. Six more runs came across for the home team in the fourth inning as freshman Claudia Umbrell (Willow Hill, Pa., Fannett Metal ) had a 2-RBI single that scored Carbaugh and freshman Kaylee Quillen (Glenville, Pa., South Western). Carbaugh would later drive in the final run with a single that scored Rexrode to make the final 23-0.

Inside the Box Score: Rexrode and Perrin each had 3 hits for the Phoenix while Roth and Perrin led the team with 4 RBI each. Rexrode and Bradley tallied 3 RBI a piece. Newman collected her first win of the season as she, Carbaugh, sophomore Daphne Buzard (Kane, PA., Cocalico) and junior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) combined for a no-hitter. 

GAME 2: After a pair of bases loaded walks put the Phoenix on the board, Buzard collected the first hit of the game with a single to left field that scored Quillen and Bradley for a 4-0 lead. Newman and Roth each collected singles in the inning to score Quillen and Buzard as the team held a 7-0 advantage after the first inning. After leaving the bases loaded in the second inning, the Phoenix tacked on 6 more runs in the third. Umbrell led off the inning with a double to right field and came around to score on a single by Roth. Bradley had an RBI double that brought home freshman Baille Jones (Shippensburg, Pa., Shippensburg). Later Buzard cracked an inside the park home run that scored Bradley and Quillen as the Phoenix lead grew to 13-0. Newman struck out the Tigers in order in the top of the fourth and the home team offense went back to work in the bottom half of the inning with 8 more runs. Freshman Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, Pa., Donegal) got the scoring started with a double to left field that scored Jones and Shockey. Later in the inning Newman cracked a double that scored Carbaugh and Buzard. Another single by Bradley brought home Shockey for the second time in the inning to close out the scoring for the hosts as the lead grew to 21-0. Newman closed out the win with three straight ground outs to first base as she and Carbaugh combined for the teams second no-hitter of the day.

Inside the Box Score: Buzard and Newman each tallied 3 hits to pace the offense while adding 6 RBI and 3 RBI respectively. Bradley also had 3 RBI in the win. Newman pitch 3 innings of no-hit ball while striking out 6 Tigers. Carbaugh fired 2 innings and struck out 3.

Up Next: Wilson is home on Wednesday versus Mary Baldwin with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
