MORRISTOWN, N.J.- The Phoenix men's volleyball team took on the College of St. Elizabeth this afternoon in a NEAC match. Wilson (5-13, 2-6 NEAC) defeated the Eagles (5-14, 0-8 NEAC) in three sets to grab their fifth win of the season.
How It Happened: The first set was tight, as both teams went back-and-forth for the first seven points of the match. The Phoenix went on to score the next six points off two aces from
Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) and a kill from
Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy). The Phoenix later extended their lead up to 22-15 and closed out the first set with a 25-16 win. Wilson had a solid first set, registering 11 kills on 33 attempts.
Aaron Hoke and
Oliver Perry each had 3 kills in the first set.
Wilson fell behind early in the second set, with the Eagles jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Phoenix answered back and eventually knotted things up at 16 after a kill by
Aaron Hoke. The Eagles jumped back ahead 17-16 but Wilson scored the next 5 set points to take a 21-17 lead. The Phoenix held off the Eagles for the remainder of the set and grabbed a victory after another
Aaron Hoke kill put Wilson up 25-20. Wilson had a huge second set, pouring on 16 kills on 34 attempts in the set.
Aaron Hoke had a monster set with 9 of the 16 kills.
The Phoenix came out in the third set playing with some aggression as they were able to take a quick 8-1 lead. The Eagles wouldn't go away however, bouncing back and finding themselves trailing 12-10. Several errors by the Eagles allowed the Phoenix to go ahead 14-10 and moments later they were able to close in on a victory, holding a 19-14 advantage. The Eagles rallied back to tie the game at 19 but Wilson scored the next five of six points in the match to win 25-20. The Phoenix had another solid set with 11 kills on 28 attempts.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix totaled 38 kills in the game on 95 attempts for a .158 hitting percentage.
Aaron Hoke tallied 17 kills in the game to put him over 1,000 career kills.
Oliver Perry and
Allen Bull (New Freedom, Pa., Susquehannock) each had solid games with Perry having 7 kills and Bull adding 5. Perry also had racked up 3 aces for the match.
Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) assisted on 32 of the 38 Phoenix kills while
Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) finished with 9 digs.
