CHAMERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team took on Penn State Harrisburg this afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader. The Phoenix (3-3-2) defeated the Nittany Lions (10-6-1) 2-0 in the first game and tied the second game with a score of 7-7.
Game 1: Junior
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) got the starting nod in the first game, as she was able to retire the top of the first in order. Picking up play in the bottom of the second inning, junior
Jennifer Cail (Lisle, IL, Lisle) was able to score off a wild pitch, bringing the score to 1-0 in favor of Wilson. Later on, in the bottom half of the sixth,
Cail smacked a double into left field and freshman
Kaylee Quillen (Glenville, Pa., South Western) came in to pinch run for her. The next batter, sophomore
Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) laid down a bunt that resulted in an error for the Nittany Lions,
Quillen would come in to score; brining the score to 2-0 Phoenix. Wilson would go on to win 2-0.
Inside the Box Score: Potter was on fire throughout the game as she would go on to pitch a shutout and earn her third win of the season.
Cail finished the game hitting 2-3, including two doubles, while freshman
Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) finished going 2-2 with a two hits and a walk. The Phoenix finished scoring two runs off of six hits while holding their opponent to zero runs and just four hits.
Game 2: In the second game, sophomore
Daphne Buzard (Kane, PA., Cocalico) got the nod for Wilson. After a scoreless first inning, the Phoenix were able to light up the score board in the bottom of the second as they would score 7 runs off 8 hits. Freshman
Gabriella Newman (Hanover, Pa., South Western) got things started for Wilson as she singled to right field, driving in two runs. A few batters later,
Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) would follow by hitting a single to center field that scores another run. Junior
Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim), freshman
Chloe Perrin (Milton, Pa., Milton),
Durant and sophomore
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) would also all finish the inning with RBIs. In the top of the third, the Nittany Lions would respond by scoring six runs that brought the score to 7-6, still in favor of the Phoenix. Later on in the top of the seventh, Penn State was able tie the game up at seven apiece as Nina Bruno would hit a homerun to left field. Despite a valiant effort Wilson could not get the bats going and the game ended in a 7-7 tie.
Inside the Box Score: Six Phoenix hitters finished with RBIs.
Roth went 2-3 with one RBI,
Durant finished going 3-4 with one RBI and
Newman went 2-4 with two RBIs. Wilson finished the game with seven runs on 11 hits while the Nittany Lions finished with seven runs off of nine hits.
Up Next: The Blue and White will be back in action this Saturday, March 30, where they will open up conference play on the road against Centenary University (7-13, 2-0 CSAC) in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
